The league of extraordinary bad chess engines

Postby Roy van Rijn » 03 Feb 2011, 15:41

After about a week of programming I've got my chess engine working in winboard/Arena. This is great because now I can play against my own chess engine.

But I can't test this engine all by myself, so I thought: How about testing it with the existing engines that come with Arena? Well, this obviously ended up in disaster... they all beat my dumb engine hands down. Not giving away a single point or draw.
Is this a good way to test? Should I look for other very weak engines and test against those? Creating a little league of extraordinary bad chess engines on my PC and let them fight for victory?

If so: What engines are a good starting point? How do you guys check if changes to the code result in improved playing style or not?

Hello Roy

You might want to check my Promo tournament results in order to choose opponents for your engine. Actually a league for lousy engines looks like a good idea :)

And of course, I'd be happy to include it in the next edition of this Promo tournament, that should start in 3 months.

Hey, my engine is not lousy, it is just a bit raw, a unpolished diamond :-)

I've found some weak engines now, Ace being one of the weakest. It is just painful to watch though at the moment.

Well... "lousy" in the chesswar club is used in a general basis, but Olivier got it out of context :-)

A good sparring partner would be micro-Max, as it has virtually no evaluation other than material, and virtually no move ordering either. (Only hash-move first, no killer, no history.) So if your engine is bug free and has only a little bit of knowledge, (like piece-square tables or King Safety) it must be able to beat micro-Max.

I suggest a few days of debugging before begining a big testing phase.

For instance, do reflections of some interesting positions and see if they all get exactly the same score with eval. For instance, each of the following 4 sets are exactly the same except for rotation or color reversal:

If you release your engine binary, you will get a free army of testers who will throw more work at it than you probably can.
