In Arena I was just checking to ensure that every engine that is expected to be using TB's was picking them up correctly.

Everything was okay except:

Pharaon is picking up the TB's but not suing them correctly!

k7/8/P7/8/2K5/1Pb5/8/8 w - - 0 66 bm Kxc3;

Pharaon wants to play b3b4!?!

Any ideas

P.S. All 5 piece TB's present, and I know it is picking up the TBs as my test was to rename the TB diretcory and see the engine search normally.

I don't have that 5-piece tbs., but even with 4-piece tables only, Pharaon 3.2 displays Kxc3 with mate announcement immediatly. (It sometimes writes "illegal command" at first, I dont know why, but it always works normal.)

I suspect that some of your tbs. files may be corrupted. Did other tbs. accessing engines display the correct move in the same position?

Hi all

IIRC it is not a bug, but a feature

If you set the value

TRY_TO_WIN_DRAWN_ENDGAME

to FALSE, Pharaon should play immediately when reaching TBs positions. Otherwise it will try to win even when TBs say it's a draw.

That is the odd thing all the other engines correctly pick up Kxc3 from the TB's - so my assumption is the TB's are fine?

The problem is also repeatable - and happens during play or analysis!

It looks like Pharaon is playing for a draw in my setup?

Pls compare with the output I posted. That was with these tbs., but without kppkb. (In addition to that, I have all rook vs. rook 5-piece tbs., but these should not matter here.) That's how it should look like. But I see no tbs. access in your log after removal of kppkb, but Pharaon should access the 4-piece tbs. then (finding the mate immediatly too, because it's just one ply before a 4-piece position is reached).

All special Pharaon setting were on default.

I will re-download the complete 3/4 TB's however I am puzzled as Anmon seems happy with them - or at least thats my understanding from the Anmon output.

You may use Crafty to check for corrupted tbs.
It exits if it's the case.

Does this give confirmation the the TB's are not corrupt or is there some command you must issue to crafty to validate?

If Crafty find a corrupted tb it issues a warning and exits.

There is also a very good tool for tbs:

It is a chess engine with its own GUI but the main purpose of it (IMO) is to work with tbs (test them).

I apologize, I was too lazy to copy/paste the FEN into my favourite GUI and thought it was a draw position. BTW, this forum has a pretty diagram feature, why not use it ?

I will use Wilhelm to validate my TB's thanks Igor, however I doubt that is the problem as the other engines have used the same TB directory and found the corrct move - see Anmon output provided.

Does the Pharaon log give any ideas to anyone
