[Moderation] Arena, Arena...

Postby Volker Pittlik » 03 May 2005, 20:29

I got several personal messages and e-mails about Arena messages in this forum.

My general suggestion: please calm down gentlemen!

It is not a crime to post a message related to Arena here.
It is also not a crime to post a message about a Chessbase program or any other program here.

The only thing to remind could be that there are forums, websites, support forms where you can get a better support for your problem. It could be that someone here knows the solution for your problem, but the other websites are especially created for that purpose.

Regards

Volker

Hi Volker (and Roger):

I've read (or at least tried to read) carefully the comments above and those in the LG Revival thread and I get mixed signals. I understand the logic that an Arena bug report might get better attention in the Arena forum. However, most bug reports aren't bugs but simply problems. And the members of this forum have proven themselves to be highly capable of helping with problems - of all sorts. So I disagree; this is an excellent place to seek help with Arena. But if Arena posts are not welcome due to other circumstances, I, and I think other members, can respect that. We just need some clear direction.

Hello Dan,

Please tell me how I can assist in this process of making it clearer than I have already. I agree that there are some formidable minds here (excluding myself of course). I agree that solutions crop up here at a higher rate than normal.

Arena posts are not a problem. Arena bug reports are. A post about a competition held in the Arena gui is not a problem. A post describing Winboard as an archaic piece of crap is. A post pointing out the merits of UCI as compared to the WB protocol is not a problem. A post pointing out that the WB protocol is the realm of dinos is.

A post lauding the merits of the Fritz gui will not receive a welcome reception from me. Ditto for a post that consists of forty chessbase engines and a token winboard engine thrown in. It is a matter of feeling and cannot be rigidly defined.

When in Disneyland, do not mess with the mouse. Seems simple enough.....

Perhaps what is required is a gui complaints section where all the Arena, Fritz, Chesspartner etc. problems can be posted and discussed .....

Sigh.

As for the other circumstances, well.........

Later.

Hi Roger,

when I asked Volker if he minded me posting my tournaments in this forum, he told me I was most welcome to do so. Has this now changed?

Regards, Graham.

Hello Graham,

Below is a quote from my post. Note the parts in bold.

Arena posts are not a problem. Arena bug reports are. A post about a competition held in the Arena gui is not a problem. A post describing Winboard as an archaic piece of crap is. A post pointing out the merits of UCI as compared to the WB protocol is not a problem. A post pointing out that the WB protocol is the realm of dinos is

I believe that answers your question more than adequately.

Later.

Ps. Thanks for all of those long timecontrol competitions incidentally.

Hi Roger:

I don't think your response was fair to me. I'm not messing with the mouse. I adore the mouse. You have never heard me utter a single negative word about the mouse.

I'm talking about posts like "I used engine XYZ with Arena and it won't ponder". Is that a bug report? Could be, but probably more likely that something is set up wrong and another member here could quickly solve the problem.

Hi Volker and Roger,

Thanks for the confirmation that I can continue to post my tournament results in this fine forum. It was the above part of Roger's comments that had me worried,

Regards, Graham.

Hello Dan,

The mouse comment was not addressed to you.

I apologise if I gave that impression. Your love for the old and unaesthetic (well, that is changing by leaps and bounds these days!) mouse is evident.

Your post above would be fine.

Hello Graham,

I shoot straight. You never have to worry about where I am coming from. In fact if you have to ask then it probably means that the answer is no.

:D

Yes I agree, it is a fine forum.

I cannot see why you should be worried Graham.

I cut and paste that list from your latest effort.

The WB representation speaks for itself in my humble opinion. Loudly and clearly.

Nothing token about it.

Your style, presentation and conduct have all been classy. No problems here.

Thanks for some really scary CM logos...

Later.
