problems with Crafty

Postby Dan-the-K » 12 May 2005, 17:30

I have been using Crafty 19.17 and as discussed in another thread, I've now downloaded Crafty 19.19 (Crafty1919blended.exe). I'm having problems with both.

When I run ver. 19.17, it doesn't display white(1). When I first downloaded ver. 19.19, it did but now it doesn't anymore. Since I use copies of the same collateral files (except for paths) for both versions, I suspect there might be something in the crafty.rc file.

Following is the 19.19 *.rc file (please excuse the bandwidth):

adaptive 38K 16M 48M 2M 24M book on book width 6 book random 1 cache=8M display movenum draw offer draw accept egtb flag off hash=48M hashp=24M kibitz 2 learn off log on noise 1 ponder off resign=99 show book speech off tbpath=L:\chess\tbplus xboard exit

I also have problems using both versions in Chess Partners 5.3. Crafty 19.19 destroys the interface so it can't be run again. The only solution is to reinstall Chess Partners. Crafty 19.17 just doesn't work. I make a move for white and it lays dormant. On a 5 minute time control, it uses up several minutes before I terminate it. Yes, I've checked. The players setting is correct.

I haven't yet tried Winboard.

Lastly, what is Cygwin1.dll? Do I need it to run Crafty?

Thanks,

Dan

Oh, I forgot to mention something. When I run either version directly, the output starts with some useful paramter comments. The very last line before it expects input is: "tellicsnoalias kibitz Hello from Crafty v 19.19!"

Thanks, Skoony. The crafty.rc file does make a difference. Now it starts with white (1). However, after I enter a move, it shows a bunch of analysis, gives black (1) and then gives white (2) and so on. It also says something about pondering.

More work to be done ...

Problem solved. For some reason, I thought that in Crafty.rc, lines that begin with ";" are just comment lines and are not executed. Nope.

I wanted to minimize the information Crafty outputs to the screen, so now it just gives its move without displaying the analysis. It doesn't say what it expects me to move (:Ponder off" or "Easy").

Here is the rc file I ended up with:

adaptive 38K 16M 48M 2M 24M
book on
book width 6
book random 1
cache=8M
display movenum
display notime
display nochanges
display novariation
display nostats
display noextstats
display nomoves
draw offer
draw accept
drawscore=0
flag off
hash=48M
hashp=24M
kibitz 0
learn=7
log on
mode normal
noise 99
output long
ponder off
resign=99
speech off
swindle off
tags
tbpath=L:\chess\tbplus
egtb
exit
