How to use the forum search facility

Postby Anonymous » 26 May 2005, 19:56

When I search for a word by clicking on "Suchen" (probably called search in the English language interface of this forum), I obviously get all the hits as expected. Then I click on on message and read it. When I click back, the browser is not able to show the page with the search hits again. Am I doing anything wrong? How to do it correctly? Win XP home, IE 6 SP 2.

Regards,
Dieter

I clicked on "Suche". Typed in "UCI" in the first editable field, left everything else default. Hit Enter. I get many hits. Clicked on the title of the first hit, which was " Tinkering with Winboard". I clicked "Zur?ck" (Back) in the browser symbol area. Then I get:

---

[...]

Clicking on "Aktualisieren" (refresh) brings me back to the search mask (!?) without anything filled out.

The same, when I hit backspace, instead of clicking "Zur?ck" in the step before.

Cheers,
Dieter

Strange, on another computer, it works as expected. I thought, it had exactly the same setup. So, it might have configured something weird in my browser settings on one computer. Any idea, what it could be? Is there a method, to export all relevant browser settings to a text file for easy comparision? (I guess not, and might try to compare the settings side by side - if I have enough patience ...)

While I am at it, another strange thing with this forum (really unimportant, I am just curios). Sometimes I see the correct times of postings, sometimes they are one hour off (8:20 pm displayed, while 9:20 pm would be correct).

Ahh, I just seem to have detected the cause. In my profile, I have GMT+1. This probably was correct when I logged in here first. With summer time, it is GMT+2. Are we expected to change the time zone setting with start and end of summer time?

Not really complaining - it is such a little thing. But was not obvious to me.

Cheers,
Dieter

I don't know if that have to do with the browser settings. I may have to do with the forum cookie. You can try to delete it on the computer where it does not work correctly.

Handling of summer timer isn't really a strength of the phpBB software. In fact it doesn't exist at all. Therefore time has to be changed manually every half year. In additon the hoster changed the server time from local Swiss time to GMT. Maybe I should do that too.

What should be the name of the cookie? I did:

C:\DOKUME~1\Dieter\Cookies>ren "dieter@wbforum.volker-pittlik[2].txt" "odieter@wbforum.volker-pittlik[2].txt"

At that time, it was the only file that includes "wbf" in the name. I started IE afterwards. The problem is still there. Now I get:

C:\DOKUME~1\Dieter\Cookies>dir *wbf*
[...]
27.05.2005 19:34 198 dieter@wbforum.volker-pittlik[2].txt
22.05.2005 20:40 109 odieter@wbforum.volker-pittlik[2].txt

Are there any other cookies, I should get rid off?

If you are wondering, that in the path DOS filenames are used - this happens always, after using some old DOS tools (that still work well). It happens on all computers, I tried. This is really off topic, but if anybody knows, how to avoid this switching to short filenames in paths, I'd be interested to hear it. Don't tell me, to not use those old DOS tools - some, I have written myself, and they won't compile anymore with Windows compilers.

Dieter

I tried everything with the IExplorer. I usually use Firefox. I couldn't reproduce the error with the "Zur?ck" button. Everything worked as expected.

The name of the cookie (as defined in the forum) is "wbforum040924". With Firefox I can see this cookie in two instances: wbforum040924_data and wbforum040924_sid. Using IExplorer there is something saved in
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Volker\Cookies\volker@wbforum.volker-pittlik[1].txt. Inside this textfile I find the expected "wbforum040924_data".

I have no idea where this "odieter" comes from. I suggest to delete both files. Note you have to log in again after that and enter your password if you had enabled auto-login.

It't there, because I renamed the "dieter" cookie to odieter, instead of deleting it - see above. The idea was, in case the deleting of the cookie hlped, I still had it to investigate it, and perhaps find out what the real problem was.

Deleting the cookies did not help. I have not looked carefully into it, but setting all Internet options to default (the same, as they are on my other computer, where everything works as expected) didn't help either. I am pretty sure, my computer is clean from viruses/spyware/... . Hijackthis didn't show anything suspicious, either. I will look into it further (but not now).

Dieter

The problem is gone no. It went away, after I did the following things. Maybe not too interesting for you, but perhaps it still gives a hint to anybody, who can explain it. I give the German names of the commands I used, and my guessed English translations.

In IE under Extras->Internetoptionen (Extras-Internet options)
I clicked Allgemein/Tempor?re Internetdatein (General/Temporary internet files)
on
Dateien L?schen (delete files)

Under the same Tab under Verlauf (history??) I clicked on "Verlauf leeren" (clear history?)

I hope the problem will not come again. Could it be related to the fact, that I have a different way to connect to the Internet since a while? Before I used a DSL-Modem, where I dialed in. Now I have an "access point" - (a mini router, that does handle the Internet connection itself - I can access it by WLAN and by "wire". On this particular computer, I use the Ethernet cable normally, although the problem was the same when using WLAN).

Dieter
