Hi all :) ,

so Spike opted for the most boring line here, playing 13...f6 14.de5: de5: and then exchanging Queens and taking on e5 with the Knight.

http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/mystic.htm

Uri?s initial question was if Black would have practical chances to survive in the lines when 12...Ne4: is played instead of hg5:?.

Instead of analysing this endgame now my proposal would be to play 12 games with CEGT time control (four from Spike against Movei, Shredder, Junior each) with the following lines:

a) 12...Ne4: 13.Nf3 Ng5
b) 12...Ne4: 13.Nf3 f6 14.Qe2
c) 12...Ne4: 13.Nf3 f6 14.Qd3
d) 12...Ne4: 13.Nf3 f6 14.de5:

If this is okay I would post the pgn?s here in a few days.

By the way it would also be a good idea to play some games for example Shredder vs. Junior with 1 hour per move (being this somehow what hardware would give in the future with much shorter time controls).

Best Regards

Hi all :) ,

having all this apparently favourable positions in mind Spike starts to dance around in the garden showing delusions of grandeur and shouts out loud:"Take whatever line you want I will destroy all of you like the great Gary Buffoon."

"Bah, you are nothing else than a megalomaniac", Brujatrace replies casting a mighty spell and more chessboards with the critical positions can be seen in the garden inviting for a simultaneous match.

So for the end of this short story have a look at the matches in the replay zone. All games were with 40/20 repeated on Athlon 64 3500+.

http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/tabellen/spicer3.htm

Note to Uri: the most critical line for Black seems to be 13...f6 14.Qe2 Bf5 15.dxe5: dxe5: 16.Ne5:, where Spike still "kills" Shredder, Junior and Movei.

Do you see any improvements for Black compared to the games here?

The line proposed by Uschi with 13...f6 14.Qd3 Bf5 15.Rfe1 Qd7 16.Rxe4 seemingly does not give enough, but maybe there are also improvements like for example 16.de5:

So maybe 13...Ng5 is better. Would be interesting to see what stronger players or programs than Spike 0.9a could make out of that line.

Without analyzing the games I remember that in the line 13...f6 14.Qe2
programs did not like 14...Bf5 after long analysis

The line of spike in the analysis before changing it's mind to dxe5 with trading queens was:

14.Qe2 (18.06 0.60) Ng5 15.Bg5: hg5: 16.Qc4+ Kg7 17.Qc6

Results of the games prove that black has at least practical chances
after 12...Nxe4 and shredder could even win one game and even Movei could draw one game against spike.

Hi Uri :) ,

yes, after 14.Qe2 Ng5 Black should also have better practical chances.

Interesting that a lot would change here with longer analyses, what would mean longer time controls or faster CPU?s.

I am not sure if hardware improvements will be as big as they used to be for some time in the future still, so a lot will come from programs with better search and/or evaluation, too. Maybe at some point we will be unable to understand the games of computer chess programs (partly I am already failing today to do so).

Okay, I am looking forward to more entertaining games from Uschi, who is having few free time these days. Was just an episode from my side, but compared to her?s my fantasy is somehow crippled.
