How do you evaluate this position?

Postby Tord Romstad » 25 Jul 2005, 13:22

Hi all,

I was a little bit in doubt about where to post this message. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to post it in the programming forum, but because I am at least as interested in the opinions of strong human players as in the opinions of programmers, I choose to post here.

I am currently trying to improve my program's understanding of development, space and mobility. So far, I haven't been very successful. I have seen some interesting games, and Glaurung seems to have a more active style of play, but the results remain mostly the same.

While testing my evaluation changes, I had a look at the following position:
[diag]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/3PP3/8/1PP2PP1/RNBQKBNR[/diag]
Code: Select all
rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/3PP3/8/1PP2PP1/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1

Glaurung 0.2.5u (my most recent development version) evaluates this position at +0.79 for white, which strikes me as remarkably optimistic. The score starts dropping when I let Glaurung search from the given position, but it remains positive. After 13 plies, the score is +0.20.

Surely white has some compensation, but is it really worth more than two pawns? I would be interested to learn how other engines evaluate this position, and also about the opinions of the strong human players among you.

Perhaps it would also be fun to run a little blitz tournament from the above position with some strong engines.

Hi Tord,
Kiwi evaluates the position at -1.37. It gives white bonuses for mobility and pawn structure, but also a malus because the king is too exposed. I think this last factor is a defect and will have to fix it, probably bringing the score around -1.00 or so.
I've also tried Yace and got -0.85 after a few plies search.

I can't imagine that white is equal with two pawns less, but I can't really judge since my chess understanding is too limited. :-)

Fruit gives an equal evaluation on shallow depth and only a slight negative evaluation on deeper depth:

Hi,

This is what Natwarlal thinks, but then Natwarlal's scores don't mean much since it has very little chess knowledge.

At a first glance, I would doubt it too, but I wouldn't call myself a strong player. But in this position, White may consider ideas involving Ra1-a3-h3 or similar. Black is definetely in trouble. The position requires sharp aggressive play by White before the dynamic advantage slips away. So I tried Nimzo 8 (very agressive opener) and Hiarcs 9 "aggr." (alternative engine setting):

Code: Select all
Analysis by Nimzo 8:

  ?  (-0.77)   Depth: 12/28   00:01:50  139474kN

The pv contains a sacrifice of another pawn: Black must not play 4...Qbx2 (so, 3...Qb6 doesn't make much sense either).

Code: Select all
Analysis by Hiarcs 9/aggr.:

1.Bc4 e6 2.Nc3

Not convincing... Hiarcs insists on the knights developement to c6/f6, but there, one or even both knights will be chased away when White's center pawn(s) advance(s). That cannot be good.

So, we may have the problem that the progs fail to find a good solid developement for Black (I'm not sure if it's even possible though).

For CSS 4/2002, I made an experiment:

[diag]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/3PP3/2NB1N2/PPPBQPPP/R3K2R[/diag]
rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/3PP3/2NB1N2/PPPBQPPP/R3K2R b KQkq - 0 7

I let play complete games starting from this position, eng-eng (P3/700, 8m+3s). Junior 5 was the only one winning all games with White. Shredder 5.32 was the best attacker (shortest wins). Tiger 14 was the best defender, scoring 2 wins and 2 draws from 8 games, with Black from this crazy position!

When Black scored 20%, it means that these (old) engines, in average, did not handle the extreme developement advantage very well. I guess no GM would let Black escape. I don't know if the latest engines would do significantly better. :?:

Re: How do you evaluate this position?

Postby Tord Romstad » 26 Jul 2005, 08:25

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies so far. Just for fun, I played a blitz game (4+1) between Glaurung 0.2.5u (who thinks white has the advantage) and Glaurung 0.2.4 (who thinks black is better):

Code: Select all
[Event "Computer chess game"]

[Result "1-0"]

This doesn't prove anything at all, of course, except that white has a serious and lasting inititiative. The lowest score I saw for white in this game was around -0.2.
