Hi All,

MSVC++ 6.0 build here. Did a quick bench,
seems about as fast as Dann's builds.

http://homepages.tesco.net/henry.ablett ... 1920ja.rar

regards,
Jim.

I thought I'd test out my new 'Intel compiler 9' on the
Crafty 1920 source. Wow! - this one is fast - getting into
'Hofmann' territory >

Intel Compiler 9 PGO build: http://homepages.tesco.net/henry.ablett ... -intel.rar

best,
Jim.

Crafty 19.20 differences?

Postby Guenther Simon » 26 Aug 2005, 14:53

Thanks to Roger and Jim, I have now 2 compilations of
Crafty 19.20. To my surprise though the analysis of Craftys
loss in Class A 3rd round (that was 19.19BH) gives 2
different results(at least after ply 12)?
Are they compiled from the same source, IIRC Dann has made
a few last minute changes to the source?
Of course same settings and learn files deleted after each analyis
and also WB restarted...search always aborted after 180 seconds.
(I have added an analysis of older 19.11DC too just for curiosity)

I re-compiled the Intel Crafty 1920 build
(a bit faster again) - same link as above.
This version is P3 and above only.

Re: Would someone please send me the new Crafty?

Postby Anonymous » 30 Aug 2005, 04:36

hi I downloaded from the first link thank you. I'm new to this crafty thing and was wondering... I see further down the posts that there is an 'intel' flag on the end of one of the files linked. Is there a compiling process which optimizes for different processors?
I'm running an AMD AthlonXP 3000+
Also, I know absolutlely nothing about compiling C++ so I was hoping to be directed to a suitable dl mirror for a compiled version.
I'm not so sure I really care about which version. I would just like to play a good strong game of chess on my computer ( read: get a good thrashing) every once in a while or look for a hint when problem solving.
Work on openings etc...
Also I like to learn things which are completely useless to me such as, why the speed of compiling makes a difference in the end product. I would have guessed that the code compiles one way and that's what you get but you seem to be talking about different compiling processes being better than others.
And since I"m new to the board I'll give the obligatory, "Thanks in advance" statement. :D

Jim Castile

I'm not so sure I really care about which version. I would just like to play a good strong game of chess on my computer ( read: get a good thrashing) every once in a while or look for a hint when problem solving.
Work on openings etc...
Also I like to learn things which are completely useless to me such as, why the speed of compiling makes a difference in the end product. I would have guessed that the code compiles one way and that's what you get but you seem to be talking about different compiling processes being better than others.
And since I"m new to the board I'll give the obligatory, "Thanks in advance" statement. :D

Hello Jim,

Welcome.

With regards to matching the versions to your machine an outstanding (bewilderingly large!) of source of Crafty execuatbles can be found at the site of Bryan Hofmann.

You could use the WBEC link at this Forum and then go the news section. From there you can find the link to BH's builds. If you use a computer then the appropriate Crafty build is there waiting for you.

While you are at the WBEC you can download a host of engines which will give you a good whipping if that is your pleasure.

Download Roce for your ego.

:-)

The author is going to damage it by making it stronger and therefore totally worthless as a punching bag and ego booster. Get it now while the getting is good.

It is fun to play against!

Who knows anything about compiling?

I just wait for Dann, Jim, Peter and Bryan to compile and offer the good stuff.

Welcome again and there is nothing wrong with saying thanks, new or not.

I am ancient and I still do it...

:-)

Later.

I'm running an AMD AthlonXP 3000+
Also, I know absolutlely nothing about compiling C++ so I was hoping to be directed to a suitable dl mirror for a compiled version.

There are different ways to compile the crafty code which I will break down as Compiler Flags and Crafty Flags. 1st the compiler flags, there are many different compiler and each one has its own flags which are used to optimize code for execution. With chess engines for the most part the more Nodes Per Second (NPS) searched the better the engine will preform. Note that comparing NPS between engines is not useful due to different seach methods used by the engines nor does it mean that a engine that has a higher NPS will be stronger. Crafty has a few different compile time flags that effects the way it plays. Futility Pruning and Detect Draw, Futility Pruning prunes off moves that are are evaluated as bad moves in the search tree and those lines are not seached. This enables the engine to search greater depths in a given time period. This is not always perfect in that a move may be pruned off and not seached fully which could be a better move. Detect Draw or blockading adds an additional step in the search function that looks for blocked position and tries to find away around them rather then assuming a draw position. This leads the engine to search further in the tree and thus take more time with abit slower NPS.

Which is better or worse you might ask, the only answer is, it depends on the position. In some positions one is going to be better then the other. A method for testing the speed or NPS is build into Crafty, after executing you can type bench at the Crafty prompt. This makes the engine go thru 6 position to a set depth and reports the total nodes searched, time it took and NPS. Crafties compiled with Futility pruning will search less nodes and get thur the test quicker.

My site has several different compiles of Crafty for different platforms in 32bit and 64bit. Note that with the 64bit compiles you will need a 64bit version of Windows.

Thank you very much for the help. I seem to have been able now to get crafty working in Winboard. :D
Now I just need to learn how to make my own pieces!
Going to dl the book files tonight. I'm stoked!
