To Leo Dijksman re Scorpio 1.5

Postby Kurt Utzinger » 02 Sep 2005, 09:30

Hi Leo
Why is Scorpio 1.5 on your homepage only
available in rar-format instead of the more
common zip-format. I don't like to install
the RAR-Zip-Program for the very seldom
cases where people don't use Winzip.
Kind regards
Kurt

There is a great tool in sourceforge named '7-zip'. It handles most common compressed formats, like zip, gz, bzip2, rar.
I use this in Windows and never had to install any other archiver.

I agree that 7-zip is a great utility.

Another one that I often use is IZArc: http://www.izarc.org/

It can also handle most formats (including RAR), and I like its gui.

Well, i prefer the original WinZip, and i payed for that great tool.
Yes there will be probleme with bzip2 and rar files. I'm using often cygwin for my development and its include unrar and bzip2 of course ;)

This is just another way...

Hi Kurt,

I use it for more programs, the main reason is that files compressed with to rar are in some cases much smaller as zip format!
In case of Scorpio it is mainly because of the bitbases.
I use WinRar for it, its very easy to use and it can open all formats, a trial version can be found here:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Probably I will use rar for all files somewhere in the future because it will save 8-10% datatraffic from my site and it saves also time/money for people who still are using a dial-up connection.

Best wishes,
Leo.
