Hi Leo,
1: The King 3.23 43.0 / 60
2: Ruffian 2.1.0 40.5 / 60
Ruffian needs at least 3 points against Green Light Chess
while Deep Sjeng had to crush The King.
Seems rather impossible to me :-) Ruffian will be second (again)
after The King. Ruffian lost the championship against Smarthink (again)
IMHO.
But anyway my congrats to Johan De Koning. If Johan plays on a faster
machine in ICT Leiden and with more then 16Mb hash under his (ugly)DOS interface,he would certainly be in the TOP 3 !!
PS : off course i'm still hoping on some kind of miracle for
my beloved Ruffian.
Best
Johan

The second division is especially interesting because of the closeness of places 2-8.
They are separated by only 4 points. Amateur will probably get 3.5 or 4 points and so is probably not out of the running completely. Amy obviously has the toughest go of it.

I do not think that you are right.
the opponent Resp is a strong program that was extremely unlucky in this division.
When it is more lucky it can score better than chezzz.
It beated Movei in this division.

No
You assume that slowchess is the best program in this division and it is not obvious.
It may be the program with the best luck.

S-B projections for Div 2

Postby Norm Pollock » 21 May 2004, 21:05

Geschrieben von:/Posted by: Norm Pollock at 21 May 2004 22:05:32:
Als Antwort auf:/In reply to: WBEC Ridderkerk new results. geschrieben von:/posted by: Leo Dijksman at 21 May 2004 16:46:31:

Every game adjusts almost all the other S-Bs because for each win an engine gets S-B points equal to the regular points of the engine it defeated. So if A beats B, and later B beats C, then A gets an S-B point because B beat C. So keep in mind that the values I will give do not include secondary adjustments.
To see how the 7 engines compare in S-B points in case of a tie in regular points (otherwise S-B points don't matter), I projected a 7-way tie at 40 pts each for 2nd place in Division 2. It is possible because none of the 7 engines play each other in the final round of 4 games.
Here is how the S-B points will come out without accounting for secondary adjustments (which could change differences approx +5/-5)
Phalanx: 1203
Movei: 1221.5
Gothmog: 1224.5
TheBaron: 1203
KnightDR: 1210.25
Amy: 1248.5
Amateur: 1213
The important comparison is that Movei and Gothmog each have the S-B advantage over TheBaron for the 3rd playoff spot.

In that link it also scored almost the same as slowchess but slowchess has a better book in this division.

I don't think so. I do think that the competition in the list for SlowChess was not as strong as the competition for the other top programs because of the way that programs traverse the ranks (from the lowest to the top and SlowChess has not played the very top programs yet) and I therefore expect SlowChess to lose some Elo points in the next round. But SlowChess is clearly the strongest program in this division of Leo's tournament, based on every contest I have seen with a non-trivial number of games.

Last round will be interresting, Championship (The King/Ruffian), best "Amateur" (Aristarch/Crafty)
and the direct relegation spot (Dragon/Yace.....) are still open!!
2nd Division:
Round 16:
Terra 3.3b10 0½½1 2.0/4
Gothmog 0.4.7 1½½0 2.0/4

Resp 0.19 01 1.0/2 = 2 games to go!
Frenzee 146 10 1.0/2
------------------------------------
SlowChess 2.89b is the new Champion of the 2nd Division!!
Congratulations to Jonathan!!
All other decissions will fall in the last round!!

2 Aristarch 2520 25.2 259 195.0
3 SlowChess 2502 38.6 266 238.0

Lots of people underestimate SlowChess. Maybe it is the name.

Most of these games where against very weak programs.
Slowchess won League I H G with 30/30 29/30 28/30 and rating that are based on games against very weak opponents are not reliable.
There is newer slowchess that may be stronger but I do not believe that slowchess2.89 is close to the 3th place.
That list is also based on 30 minutes per game that is different time control.
I guess that new slowchess is better.
I am not sure about slowchess2.89 and I think that the difference is too small to be sure.

Well, they are reliable against any programs that it has played against, and not as reliable against those much stronger. It is a pattern I see often, that the programs put in too weak of a division get an inflated rating for a while. But in any case, SlowChess is stupendously strong.
Neither do I. But I do think it is much stronger than all the programs in the 2nd division of WBEC (which is no easy cakewalk, by any means).
