I would like to infom you that after some time of preparation is going to move within the next two weeks.
The new URL is http://wbforum.volker-pittlik.name/.
The new forum is already activated. You are welcome to register and post there.
The registration process runs automatically and takes only a few minutes.
The passwords of this forum do not work over there. The passwords are encryted.
Nobody can read them and therefore you have to register again.
In two weeks from now on no new postings are possible in this forum.
Therefore I suggest everyone to register at the new forum soon.
The old forum will stay online until March 2005 so everbody can download
the archives and search for important messages.
Some things are different in the new forum. Some will miss something. But
take a look and you will see that the new forum offers a lot more features
as this one.
- You can choose a language for the help files, board messages and so on
- Send private messages and emails
- Post tables without fiddling around with HTML
and much more.
Hope to see you over there soon.
Regards
Volker
P.S. No entrance fees and no donations :-)

New forum login name

I think you should specify if the login name must be the real name or not. I registered on the new forum with the handle that I use on nearly every other forum I participate in, when I remembered the fact that we used real names on this forum.
If we're allowed to use 'handles', then I guess I'm OK. If not, then please delete user 'brother7' on the new forum and I'll re-register.
Also, a suggestion... I'd suggest adding at least a category 'Site Status and Comments' for site-related discussion. I also thought about a 'Way Off-topic' category but that might go against the idea of a focused forum like this is.

Although I prefer real names using a pseudonym is OK. I only will delete multiple instances of the same poster using different handles or obvious fake identities.

Also, a suggestion... I'd suggest adding at least a category 'Site Status and Comments' for site-related discussion.
I think that can be done in the "Test forum". I will extend the description.

We can use the "Small Talk" forum for that.

I'll promise to do my best, but to do so is a bit more complicated (at the moment) than in the old forum.
I'm going to look how to install different "styles" of the forum. It is possible somehow even to choose different types of the "GUI".

Hm, I thought so too for many years. But this open source forum software has a very powerfull search function. Try it out after some messages have been posted.
The Parsimony script is available, but I don't want to fiddle around with it.
Please try out the new forum! I was sceptical myself but after a while I was convinced that the new forum is much better. Just try it!

That's the point. To search in different categories make things
very difficult. I do not know a single successful forum in this style.
Many many postings won't be in the correct category and so we have to
open all categories, a very time consuming matter.

Please try the Search link. Or "Suchen" if you have defined German in your profile. It's very comfortable, faster and much better than the search function in this forum.

I agree that forcing the posters to search messages at different forums is not a good idea.
I think that different categories is not a bad idea but it should be only an option when the default option when people want to read the forum will be only one category.
People who want to post may need to choose the right category so later people who are intested only in reading only one category will not need to read unnecessary noise but there is no reason to prevent people who want to read to look at all the posts of the last days like they can do today.

hi volker,
i do not need a search function :-)
like most addicts, i check those places daily, or once every 2nd day. i want to see what has been written in the time between my last visit. i do not want to open many different categories and read all of them.
just my 2 cents. i know this kind of forum from other places on the net and i really hate it, it will not change after a few posts...
bitte versteh mich nicht falsch: i really appreciate your efforts. you will never be able to please everybody. if i am one of the minority, so be it - as a swiss, i am used to this :-)

It would be yes, but the default option is to search all forums. You can search a single forum if you choose to do so.
There are two links in the upper right corner. One is called "View posts since your last visit" the other is called "View unanswered posts". Both display all messages of all forum on a single page.
I think the new features need some accustoming, but it is also possible to see the messages in the "old" style.

Volker

I think that people make their judgements too early.
The two links that you mention really make a difference.
After some more poking around I found some very neat functions that makes life easier but I still have some dubitations about dividing the forum into different areas.
Maybe it would be better to have fewer areas?
Is it possible to have a tree view like in this forum?
/Peter

I agree to have to much would be bad. I've learned to have more than seven will confuse the users.
Which sub forums would you suggest to unify?
I suggest to wait with changes some days until more non-test postings show up.
Unfortunately no. That is the only feature I'll miss.
