This link only shows "new" unread posts, not "all" posts. If i want to see all posts, i have to check each category. Really very unsatisfactory. :-(
If you are loged in the link "View posts since last visit" does exactly that.
If you click it you see all posts in all categories.

If i click "View posts since last visit", i don't see "all" posts in all categories. In fact, if there are no new posts, i see nothing. Instead i get a message "No topics or posts met your search criteria".

Right I just missed a post too. I will have a look what has gone wrong. Usually it shows the expected behaviour.

The major problem i have with this new format is all the different categories. Why the need for "categories"? The current forum doesn't have categories. If there was only one category, i would not be as unhappy with the new format. :-)

That is a general problem indeed. You don't like categories at all,
others complained because there is much of this or that in the main forum.
They send me mails "threatening" me of stop reading the forum and so on.
Now we have 4 main categories
- General (expected to be the same as here)
- Tournaments (was a subject of complaints)
- Programming (maybe of special interest for some)
- Related software and Smalltalk (really new, already united)
The look if there are new messages four clicks are necessary.
Usually indicated by a symbol.
- Test (maybe not so interesting to read it in the long run)

I already see what is going to happen. A new post will be made to one category, such as "tournaments", then the discussion will the thread into another category, such as "programming". So users still have to check each category to find messages they are interested in. Is there going to be any rule or law about posting in the wrong category?
The current format is very easy to navigate, with one click i can open the forum, scroll down and see "all" messages.

Hi Volker
I just noticed something. If a user posts a message with a text/background color combination that is hard to read, and i reply to that post with default colors, my reply gets posted in the same colors as the original post.

Dave
I would like to infom you that after some time of preparation is going to move within the next two weeks.
The new URL is http://wbforum.volker-pittlik.name/.
The new forum is already activated. You are welcome to register and post there.
The registration process runs automatically and takes only a few minutes.
The passwords of this forum do not work over there. The passwords are encryted.
Nobody can read them and therefore you have to register again.

Further testing shows that all threads opened using the search button display white text on a gray background. Opening messages in the normal way, text is in black.

I just discovered that when searching, the "searched for" text will be displayed in white. So i was searching, from a tip by Franz Huber, with an asterisk "*" in the search field. This resulted in all text to be displayed in white. So if the "white" highlighted text was changed to a different, more readable color, such a blue, there would be no problems with searching in this manner. :-)

I think that people make their judgements too early.
The two links that you mention really make a difference.
After some more poking around I found some very neat functions that makes life easier
but I still have some dubitations about dividing the forum into different areas.
Maybe it would be better to have fewer areas?
Is it possible to have a tree view like in this forum?

I agree to have to much would be bad. I've learned to have more than seven will confuse the users.
Which sub forums would you suggest to unify?
I suggest to wait with changes some days until more non-test postings show up.
Unfortunately no. That is the only feature I'll miss.
I think that the description "General - discussion about Winboard/Xboard and related topics." includes even "Related Software".
Skip "Smalltalk" - it will show up in all forums anyway. So what?
Now you have 3 forums left.
All forums will not be 100% clean from OT - so what?
I can't see what the problem is with shifting areas that some people complains about. If you are at General, for instance, there is no big deal with selecting the next forum (Tournaments) in the right bottom corner. I would have to press PageDown anyway in this forum...
IMO there are 3 useful links in order to navigate:
"forumindex" - in the left upper part of the window
"My posts" - in the right upper part at Forumindex
"Show new posts.." in the right upper part at Forumindex
and when looking at one forum, "go to forum" - in the right lower part.
wise man...:-)
Yes, that's a pity.
/Peter
