Updated: Thinkerboard 1.2a (Interface!)
Not just the interface.
The engine is now Thinker 2.7a. From now on, the Thinker engine will always be bundled with ThinkerBoard, so that there is always only one file to download.
The book format has also changed. It is no longer loaded in memory. Instead, it entirely resides on the disk in some tree layout. Because of this, the book file is much bigger, even though the content is the same.

Correction: 4.7a, not 2.7a

The engine is now Thinker 4.7a. From now on, the Thinker engine will always be bundled with ThinkerBoard, so that there is always only one file to download.

Hi Lance
I see on your download page these two download links ...
ThinkerBoard (Chess Interface and Engine) Version 1.2a 4,140,013 bytes
Thinker (Chess Engine) Version 4.4k 805,340 bytes
So users who only want the Thinker 4.7a engine must download the interface also?
(4,140,013 bytes)

Dave

Hi Lance,
Thanks for telling, I had never found it ofcourse :)
From now on, the Thinker engine will always be bundled with ThinkerBoard, so that there is always only one file to download.
Are you sure about this?
I think its not the best way to force anyone who only use the Thinker engine to download _and_ install a complete interface they will probably never use!?
I hope you will/want to change this?
Are there new features to create an book or change the values for lines/moves?
Best wishes,
Leo.

The engine with the book is 3,826,420 bytes. The big file is not the engine or the interface. It is the book. So, for simplicity, there should only be a single file to download.
So users who only want the Thinker 4.7a engine must download the interface also?

Its because the engine with the book is almost the same size - 3,826,420 bytes. The big file is not the engine or the interface. It is the book. Users can always choose to uninstall the interface once they have extracted the engine and book.
The book content is the same. If you want to create your own book, you need to use the new MakeBook utility. There is still no facility to edit the book.
The only difference is that the book layout is in some form that can be used from the disk and don't have to be loaded in memory.
The old format is a simple list of games and is compressed. To use it, the engine and bookthinker has to uncompress it in memory, and do a linear search. The current content is about 4MB in memory.
The new format is not compressed, and is a tree of moves. The engine and bookthinker can search it with a basic tree search. Using the new format requires more code, but the startup time of the engine/bookthinker is faster and the book search time is faster too.
