I was just wondering if it's something to do with Russian. I look at many places and everyone who had this problem seems to be Russian.
Is that a clue? Character set? Something like that? I must admit it stumps me so far.

This effect appears just after the installation, _before_ I apply Russian language pack. The only choice I made was pressing "English" in installator.
However, system language is Russian. But how can this affect non-localized program?

Unpacked and run it on English WinXP OS. This is _the only_ Arena ever installed on this box.

Now controls are ok, but German words still present:

I have a hypothesis that all untranslated items have Umlauts and other special German characters. When I open language file I see Russian letters instead of these Umlauts, for example:

Yes, that's it! When I replace russian 'ф' with latin 'a' the item becomes translated correct!

Resume on my two problems.

1) Locale issue. The way Arena provides localization proved to be codepage-sensible. In my case, codepage for upper bytes is always cp1251, which contains Russian letters. Arena in some way wants to have letters with German Umlauts. When it does not find them in dialog item names, these items become untranslated.

However, Russian langfile from Yuri Voronov works fine, even with Umlauts. I don't know why

2) Screen resolution issue. My settings of choice (which provide the best view on my LCD, and I don't want to change them) are 1600x1200, and 120 DPI fonts. I was told that is is typical glitch for Borland/Delphi-style GUIs, when some specific property is not set for controls. Having all other controls in Arena work well, I hope to see that fixed in the next releases. Really, I see no reasons for Arena to be DPI-sensible in 2009

99.9% of programs on my box behave correctly independably from OS settings.

Anyway, my big thanks to all people who answered and helped to find out the reasons of these bugs. Thanks to the author of Arena 2.0 (really fine GUI) as well. Happy New Year!

Don't know. All described effects were observed on WinXP SP3, both Russian and English versions.

Indeed there are. When I releases a special package of WB + Fairy-Max tailored to play variant Superchess, I got complints by people that Fairy-Max played very weak, and from the PGN they sent me it turned out it was searching only 1 or 2 ply. The problem turned out that the default hash setting in the pakage was 64MB, and they were playing it on a win98 machine with only 64MB of memory...

I had to reduce default hash to 12MB before they could run Fairy-Max without problems!

Then it it surely a codepage problem, languages are not mixed here. My Hungarian translation seems to be OK as well, although we also have our special characters like ö, even ő which is unknown for other languages. Are you sure if you make a Bulgarian translation it will look strange on the screen?

BTW, I have just read at the Arena pages that DPI and other bugs are going to be fixed in a January release.

Arena have not any problem with appearance of Cyrillic characters. The problem is with the mixed german-english in the English.lng file.

i mean if i play on ICC that length of engine information and the konsole out of the ICC both are to small, it is better not split window side by side, maybe is better icc window is free or full length, or place below the engine informations. because i wont to the in the endgame the TB access and the Hashfull or the ponder move.

my second problem is the kibitz out of the PV from the engine to the ICC, i want not self kibitz out manuelly write, that mus out Arena automaticly for me.
The rule of CCT 2009 is must kibitz engine informations out to the ICC

Polyglot must do it on winboard but i want not use Polyglot, i want only UCI mode and see many engine information during playing on ICC.
