.Net framework question

Postby Guenther Simon » 13 Jan 2009, 20:14

Hello all,

After I was quite disappointed with Vista because several chess engines
I used for testing had some problems, I went back to WINXP Pro on my new Quad.
I noticed now that I still have to install some .Net framework.
My question is now if I need some older installations too, or will 2.0 be
sufficient and backward compatible?

Hi Guenther, I'm not sure if I get the question right. Did you have some version of the .NET framework installed, or you want to install the last?

Hi Dustin,

Currently there is no .net framework installed at all on this machine.
On the other machine, which was my previous test machine, there is just
1.1 installed and here the programs in questions work. Practically I want
to know if e.g. 2.0 or any later (the newest is 3.5 IIRC) will work for
those programs too?

All the .Net version brings support for the previous versions, so I suggest you to install the 3.5, so the old engines should work and new engines based on this version can run too.

Go for the newest one,it installs all the previous modules plus the updated ones....

2.0 should do (can also run 1.1 apps).

3.5 is still pretty experimental ( though nice) They're working on splitting the interface from the data, but not much use it yet.

Hi Guenther

Just in case : the last update of .Net 2.0 made a terrible mess here (WinXP Pro 64). I had to uninstall it all and install 2.0 again without updating it.

So I have 1.1, 2.0 (first release) and 3.5 installed now. If I understand correctly, I could keep only 3.5, but since everything is working, I'll let it alone :)

Thanks to all! I decided now for an installation of 2.0 first and all programs
in doubt seem to work now. Of course if there will be new apps released
relying on higher versions there is no prob in updating again.
