Any chance to convince you to give Linux a try? If you get it to run on the old hardware you will not have to care about viruses and all that stuff again.

Hello Mike,

I assume that you are not going to go the route of the Windowz haters among us (I sympathise with them, I really do!).

You could try AVG free. It seems to offer for the price.....

There are a number of commercial programs which have a freeware counterpart with much less features etc. but still good enough if you are not going to do something silly like actually open links to unknown sites or run odd executables.

There is a program called Sandboxie which was free when last I looked. You can do your surfing in a sandbox and delete same with no stuff left on your machine including Trojans, viruses and other nasties. You can also test the strange executables we all download from the internet in a sandbox, not the processes spawned, and then decide whether to keep it or not.

I could share some more with you but this ought to get you started.

Windows Defender is a must in terms of free protection.

I hope this helps.

Later.

hi volker,
since i'm i'm back to using my old stand bye's,(gateway 433 mhz celeron desktop, gateway
solo 1150 500 mhz laptop)i am apprehensive about switching os's on them.
besides limmited disk space would force me to make some very hard desicions.
specs:gateway 433c desk top,196 mb ram,8 gb drive,windows 98 fe.
laptop solo 1150,160 mb ram,4 gb drive, windows me.
the desktop i got in 1998 and has served me well and has a lot of old chess engines and stuff on it.
the lapi got in 2000.
gave it to the daughter in 2001.got it back last year sa i needed an os that would handle
a usb wi-fi dongle.this after my newer xp e machine crapped out.
i'm very fond of my older machines, have them working well.
when i get a new,ie,propably used newer box,i'm thinking of loading linux in it.

get your advice when that happens regards,
mike
