Hi Igor,

Replace "at" with @.

I committed the same error, I copied and pasted the address blindly. I don't think Arnaud has received my e-mail. :-)
Now it's your turn. :-)

Hi Igor,

My problem with WildCat is that it accesses the 5man tablebases SO MUCH! I sometimes think it is going to break my hard drive. No other engine I use makes so many tablebase hits.

Otherwise, I like the engine very much. Thank you.

Hi Norm!

WildCat uses egtb everywhere possible. And don't store it in hash.
May be this is the problem.

I just have not 5-piece egtb and can't see how WildCat works with it.

Best wishes,
Igor

Hi Gabor,

AnMon and WildCat both start using the 5-man tbs very early. With 5 minute blitz they start accessing with about 14 pieces on the board. With 2 minute blitz they start accessing with about 10 pieces on the board. I would hate to play a long time control game between AnMon and WildCat because it would kill the hard drive.

What I have now done is limit those 2 engines to 4-man tbs, which I can do if I use their wb versions in the fritz8 gui. I set the ini file tb setting to the folder in my machine that only has the 4-man tbs, and I keep the 5-man tbs in another folder. It seems to work.

Any other engines that are also tb gluttons?

This is a good idea. I watched several of their games in horror hearing that never ending scratching of the hard disc.

At the moment I can't recall any other killer engines.

No, Pepito is just tearing my HD into pieces. Also Yace.

So this is where I stand relative to this problem. Anmon, Wildcat, Yace and Pepito are now limited to 4-man tbs on my machine. Other tb-ready engines use 5-man tbs.

I do a couple of other things based in part on this problem. I use a "small" 30G second hard drive for the chess engines and tbs. My c: is an 80G. At least if the chess drive goes, I still have my system.

I also backup (to CD) my chess folders other than the tb folders. The tb folders have to backed up separately and they require many CDs for backup.

I have done the same. This separate drive is also a good idea, unfortunately I have only one HD installed. I have also backed up the important things. If my HD ever goes astray I am not going to use 5-man EGTB's any more, at least not all of them, which I do now. There is a new opinion spreading that they are of not much benefit anyway.
