xboard and -sgf

Postby Shiloh » 13 Jul 2009, 14:29

Hello again. Here is another item I noticed in xboard 4.4.0 alpha8 .When playing on the freechess server I have a script that includes the savegamefile option among other things. It reads -sgf /home/myname/Fics/mygames.pgn. This is another excellent tool in xboard's bag of tricks. The issue I have noticed is that all my played and observed games are saved correctly ,however, xboard always saves the last game of the session twice.Once when the game is finished and then again on closing .It is a small thing but I continually have to get rid of the duplicates. Thanks

Oh yes,The King now remains visible after castling in FischerRandom and Show Move History works great both on the freechess server and play against an engine :-).

If you still have a game "open" when you close XBoard, it will auto-save it. This is not so easy to suppress without running the risk of losing games you would have liked to save. (Like some engine crashing at the point where it is checkmated, thus triggering XBoard to exit.)

I am not sure in which mode you were running, but if you were playing human vs. ICS then a game that is finished on the ICS is still open in XBoard. (I.e. the final position remains displayed, and you could use the < and > buttons to scroll through it.) It is very difficult for XBoard to determine if you want to have that game saved or not, so it has to err on the safe side. After all, even if you saved it before, you could have been editing it (adding comments).

Doesn't the problem go away when you first click "New Game" before closing XBoard?

What you are telling me is that this is a feature not a bug LOL. I reflected on what you said and it makes sense given the multi uses of xboard. It never occurred to me to select New game as when I have finished playing I just exit, but your suggestion is easy enough to remember and works well. Thanks
