It seems indeed your compile and install was succesful. Once you are setup to do this, you shouldn't have trouble installing any future versions of XBoard from source, as long as we don't drastically redesign it to make use of other infra-structure. (The GTK branch of XBoard is such a re-design.) This is why i never know what exactly is needed; I am not really a Linux man, and succeeded to get the stuff needed for compiling XBoard years ago, without really understanding what I was doing, and never had to look at it since.
