Russian translation

Postby burunduk » 25 Apr 2011, 19:13

Hello,

Although I don't like computer chess (mostly because this stupid machine pretends to be smarter than me), I have translated the winboard language file into Russian for someone who does. The most recent translation I have found is of WB 4.2.6 so possibly the updated version can be useful for other people.

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to share it. As it is stated here, all you need is to translate the file; no clue what to do with it later :)

Yes, you are in the right place! Thanks very much!

We just released the 4.5.2 source (which, for WinBoard, is practically identical to 4.5.1, and certainly all strings are the same). When we release the corresponding binary package, I will certainly include the Russian file.

I guess people that would want to use the Russian translation will typically have set CP1251 as their system default. This means WinBoard should automatically use it, even for the clocks and other graphically displayed strings. If not, the charset can be indicated with the clockFont option. (Don't know by heart what the required umber would be.)

Again, thanks! I am sure this will benefit a lot of people.

Glad I was able to help a bit. Here is a closing remark.

English words are often shorter. The previous translation was made by modifying resource files directly, so not only the strings but also the dimensions of dialogs and controls were changed. Now some strings are truncated even if there is enough space for them. The smaller text the bigger trouble and the winners are the "send" (chat) and "load" (game list) buttons.

I've added the strings for the one-letter main menu and Seirawan's variant. It seems to work. But it's not possible to translate "pause" button (previously "translated" with the ASCII art: || |> ) and the game notation in the history window (not in the PGN, obviously; although the figurine notation would be a better choice).

Some error messages and the engine settings are still in English.

Some strings exist in the language file but don't get translated:

- the caption of a (very annoying) "Comment on %d.%s%s" window (maybe because the 2nd occurence of this string is not in a _("translate me") form);

- "Promote?" caption, "YES" and "NO" buttons in the shogi promotion dialog. (It's far from being the greatest mystery thou... Honestly! How the Japanese decide which side is the black one?!)

The make utility has found a little bug in my translation: missing escape characters in two error messages. Here is the corrected version for WinBoard (see this post for XBoard).
