Startup failure when selecting Mode->Two machines

Postby pstein » 07 Aug 2011, 08:11

I wanted to let Winboard play two machine against each other: Fairy-Max and Fruit.

So the first operation after start of Winboard v4.5.2 (under 64bit Win7) is to click menu

Mode->Two machines

But then suddenly an error popup appears telling me:

Startup failure on 'polyglot -noini -ec "fruit_21" -de "./Fruit" -uci NalimovCache=2':
The system cannot find the file specified

Hmm, whats wrong?
Both engines exist in a brother folder of Winboard
I didn't change anything in the (intial) setup

I think I made a typo in the winboard.ini file packed with the distribution. :( In the install Fruit is not in .\Fruit but in ..\Fruit. So there must be specified a wrong /fd or /sd on the Fruit engine line.

Sorry, this was a typo from me. The correct error popup was:

Startup failure on 'polyglot -noini -ec "fruit_21" -de "../Fruit" -uci NalimovCache=2':
The system cannot find the file specified

So again: Whats wrong?

Well, the error message says Polyglot itself (i.e. polyglot.exe) could not be found. Are you sure there is a polyglot.exe in the same folder as winboard.exe?

Hmm, I downloaded the portable version "Download WinBoard 4.4 bare executable (477 kB)"
from this web page:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=50387

and expected that everything to run is inside.
This seems to be not the case.

So is there really no portable version which includes everything necessary to run?

'Bare' actually means really 'bare', i.e. absolutely NOTHING what you need to run it, apart from the executable itself. It is intended for people that already have WinBoard installed, and just want to upgrade to a newer version.

There is no separate portable version of WinBoard. I guess WinBoard is intrinsically portable, if you are prepared to abandon the start-menu items, and the fonts. Perhaps I should put those in a separate, optional section of the installer, so that people can deselect it when they want a pure portable install.

I am also not sure why you would want such an obsolete version.
