Reborn of sunsetter?

Postby velocidrom » 31 Aug 2013, 01:52

Hi guys,
I personally prefer crazyhouse than chess and I know almost no programming at all. I find it sad that the best engines (sunsetter and tjchess, maybe even "imortal", a new one) can lose to almost anyone. For example the tjchess engine I run on FICS lost to some people rated 1400 while the engine is rated well over 2500 but it wins many games on time with a lost position, hence such a high rating.
Anyway, recently I've noticed that sunsetter's code is open source. So I downloaded it and as a linux user I must compile it. However the compile doesn't work. So I've asked in FICS if some people could check the code and 1 person basically studied the code, made modifications in 7 files and apparently compiles on a 32 bits system. This person said that the code is very archaic and needs many modifications, etc. He also said that he isn't even sure the source code would compile on nowaday windows operating system. So he will modify it again and eventually send the whole code to me.
Since it's an open source engine I want to make the fixed code available to all, as soon as I get it.
Eventually, I really wish some programmers would create a stronger engine and keep it open source (just like what's happening with stockfish).
So I have a question: Once I get the working code, where can I post it on the web? I mean what website would be the most appropriate?
Lastly, is anyone interested in improving sunsetter?

For hosting your file check with Ron Murawski. He might be willing to host it on his wiki.

Have you tried Daniel Shawul's Nebiyu for Crazyhouse? You might have to configure it yourself for it (in the file Alien.ini). But I was surprised how strong Nebiyu was in mini-Shogi, which is reasonably similar to Crazyhouse.

Thank you guys for the replies! No, I didn't know about Nebiyu engine. I might check it out...
About the website where to post sunsetter, it occured to me that I could use github (just like stockfish does) although I don't really know how this works. In all cases I will also consider Ron's wiki, thank you.

Some news: I've just posted the code (with slight modifications compared to the original but almost the same) on github: https://github.com/arbolis/Sunsetter-crazyhouse.
Hopefully some programmers will take over the project :)

Some info I found on Nebiyu and its performance in crazyhouse. It played a tournament with 6 other engines in crazyhouse and scored "very low", see post 493 of http://immortalchess.net/forum/showthre ... post307075. Namely 6/24 with 3 losses due to non valid moves. Sunsetter, tjchess, sjeng and imortal scored significantly better. Granted, the number of games of that tournament was not high to have really accurate stats.
