how to edit the tags?

I have opened a pgn file in which there are some 200 games. If i want to edit the tags how can I do?

I tried the following and failed .
Opened the file in winboard.clicked view>tags I got the tag window, I clicked on edit. i changed the order of the item. clicked ok. then i closed the file. opened again. nothing happened. same tag order.
2) Itried to save the particular pgn with a different name and saved in another folder. when i saw the tags' order is the same.


is it possible to change the order of the items in the tag fields?Is it possible to add one more tag fields?(everything is done but not been saved in my case) is it possible to change the tags of all the PGNs in the folder in a single go? thanks for viewing

WinBoard NEVER overwrites an existing PGN file. So after editing tags, you would have to save the game on a file with a different name.

I think the PGN standard prescribes the tags order, at least for the standard tags. So it cannot be changed (or it would no longer be PGN). You can add non-standard tags, and I think there it should use the order you gave them in.

Only tags of individual games can be edited. This feature is intended to correct or add some information to a game you just played or commented, before you save it. Not for bulk processing of PGN files. If you want that, you could simply use any ext editor, and the 'Replace All' command.

I have seen the order of the tag fields are changing pgn to pgn. event, site,date,eventdate,round, result,white,black,eco,white elo,black elo,ply count are the maximum tag fields i have seen, but it's order of occurance differes in some pgn. that is why i asked the question.

Well, I am no expert on PGN. I know there is a standard for that, and that it is very specific. So I would be surprised if it allowed you to put the standard tags just in any order.
