how to select autoflag off permanently in winboard

Postby evergreen1 » 27 Apr 2014, 17:32

I want to make the autoflag off option permanently in winboard.(so that the message "white loses on time" while i play against a machine will not come)
I tried the following but failed to get the result.
I opened winboard startup dialog. I selected the engine. I clicked on " additional options" there is no drop down menu items. so i typed "autoflag off". I got an error message saying that system cannot find the file specified"
what to do to get these two additional options permanently in winboard?
1. autoflag off
2. time per move=5 seconds

Untick Auto-Flag in the General Options dialog. This is a persistent option, at least if you have Save Settings on Exit on. Note that for Boolean options WinBoard uses the keywords false and true, and does not understand on or off. -autoflag does not use an argument anyway, it always switches in on (and -xautoflag switches it off).

Fixed time per move is not persistent (and not recommended). You could set it through the -st option, which accepts minutes (so -st 0:05 for 5 seconds). You can make that the default by adding it in the winboard.ini file in the WinBoard folder. (This is the master settings file, which is not used for saving your settings, and thus never overwritten, so that it is a great place to change the default for volatile options.)

It is where you put it during install, but by default it suggests something like C:\WinBoard-4.7.3. (We avoided program files because users are then not allowed to create files in the WinBoard folder.)

Many Boolean options come in 3 flavors in WinBoard: a long form, that has to be accompanied by 'true' or 'false', and two shortcuts, one to switch the option on (like the long form had been used with 'true'), and one to switch it off. Like

-autoSaveGames true
-autoSaveGames false
-autosave
-xautosave

all control whether games will be automatically saved.

-autoSaveGames true
-autoSaveGames false
-autosave
-xautosave

sorry. I am not able to understand fully. what exactly i must do with these strings? where to put ? and for what?
for example---what will be the result if i put "-xautosave"

You could put them in the Startup Dialog 'Additional options' field.

When you would write

-xautosave

there, it would switch auto-saving of games off. (Of course you could also do that by unticking it in the Save Game Options dialog, but I just give it as an example.)
