Engines compatible with Winboard

I've had Winboard 4.6.2 for a few years now and would like to know what reasonably powerful engines are compatible with Winboard without the need for any adds or modification. I've heard good things about Komodo, but it may be that it is not Winboard-compatible, so that option may be out. I'm not a computer programmer, so I'd like something that is user-friendly and not going to be a big headache. Thank you.

I do consider all WB and UCI engines compatible with WinBoard. That includes Komodo and Stockfish (both UCI). Just be sure to tick WinBoard's UCI checkbox when you install a UCI engine. I would not consider ticking a checkbox a "big headache."

Where is the check box? There is no such box in the Startup Dialog. My Help file has never worked with Winboard 4.6.2, so asking questions of Help has been ineffectual.

The checkbox is in the Engine -> Load First/Second Engine menu dialog. The Startup Dialog only shows engines that are already installed through this menu dialog.

I guess at some point MicroSoft stopped supporting the .hlp format. Note that the standard WinBoard install also contains a file winboard.chm, which is a HTML help file. You can directly click that (it is in the same folder as winboard.exe) to launch the help viewer.

WinBoard was supposed to launch it automatically when it could not launch the .hlp viewer. I guess MicroSoft spoiled that by now providing a dummy .hlp viewer that only shows an error message, but makes WinBoard think the launch was successful. I will have a look at it.
