want to load moves in winboard

Postby evergreen1 » 14 Apr 2016, 17:50

I wanted to see the moves on winboard of a famous game between Lev polugaevsky vz Rashid Neshmetdinov held in sochi 1958. the game has 34 moves.

i got the moves from this source. i copy pasted the moves into a textfile then to winboard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3tdK8BT0aw
yt uploaded by matojelic. gives moves copied. error says winboard

when pasted only 14 moves are pasted into the move history window.

illegal move 15 Nge2------
the same game i copied the PGN from this source and when played in winboard no problem at all.
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1111459

How , the illegal move 15 Nge2 becomes legal?
I tried with other files also saved in this manner (as stated in para1 from youtube). some stops at move 8. then says 9 is illegal move!.
kindly help

I am not sure what you did. Where did you copy the moves from? You cannot copy text from a video, can you? Can you paste the moves here in the forum? Then I can try it out myself to see what the problem is.

illegal move 15 Nge2------

This is what WinBoard printed? My guess is that it chokes on the minus signs. It seems to think they are all part of the move. It is a save bet that these minus signs are not in the PGN file; it is not valid Chess notation.

thanks for the response HGM.

under the youtube video window click on "More" and u get the movelist,. I copied that, since some games movelists are only available easily in youtube, i wanted to know what happened with the movelist which are identical both in youtube and in chess.com (the PGN),
here is the list i copied from youtube.

OK, I see. The problem is the 0--0 notation used in that text for castling. This is not standard SAN (which is O-O). WinBoard already does recognize a lot of non-standard notations, and for (king-side) castling this includes OO, 0-0, 00, e1g1, e1h1. But not 0--0. The problem is compounded by the fact that ChessBase uses -- in PGN to indicate a turn pass, and WinBoard parses the input as a 'move number' 0 (WinBoard ignores move numbers other than 1), followed by a turn pass. So it never does the castlings. As a result, the move Nge2 becomes illegal, because that Knight is pinned when the white King is still on e1.

Btw, when WinBoard complains about an illegal move in the pasted or loaded game, It will still have loaded all moves upto that point. So it is possible to step to the position of the offending move with the >> (if you do this in game-viewer mode, i.e. without engine), and then you see immediately what the problem is. (With engine the engine would likely already object to the turn pass.)
