how do i select tai shogi

how do i select tai shogi

i installed everything but when i go to play it i cant it is just greyed out and cant be selected and so are manny other large variants.

As far as I know there do not exist any engines (yet) that can play Tai Shogi. WinBoard only allows you to select variants that the current first engine can play. So you can only select Tai Shogi when you start WinBoard in game-viewer mode ("View or Edit Games in the Startup Dialog). But then there is of course no AI.

ShogiVar is not an engine. It is an independent program, mainly a GUI, that has an integrated primitive (non-searching) AI for most variants. WinBoard is only a GUI, and doesn't contain any AI. The latter is entirely 'outsourced' to the engine that is loaded into it.

As far as I am aware ShogiVar is the only program that offers some kind of AI for Tai Shogi, even if it is an extremely weak one.
