Hi Gunther
That was not an error, it just tries to load the 5 piece bitbases
and lets know the user it has not been able to load it.
Well doing this for the 220 5men files may not be a good idea :)
I will send all the files.

Hi all
The source codes are available here
http://cap.connx.com/chess-engines/scorpio/
This is still a developement version so dont use
it for tournaments. But i would appreciate test games
or endgame test suite results for engines which support them.

Daniel ,
I think that if you include at the egbb the 5 pieces files, the egbb will be quite heavy. I wonder if you can create a ScorpioExp.exe version that do not look for 5 pieces files at the 4 pieces egbb folder.

Hi Gunther
Dont start using the new bitbases now.
The dll is only a beta to test some things. I have already finished backward compatibility for those who already supported them. So all of the engines who have supported the old ones
will work with the new ones. If you are interested i can send you the new
egbbdll that works with all. A few test matches between my favourite engines scorpio, gfruit, latista,Dansah? SmileSmile
daniel

Well, perhaps at the weekend, if you send it to me :)
BTW the error described by Pablo above (missing file in egbb) is fixed?

Daniel,
The new egbdll.dll for the ScorpioExperimental eggb folder that should work with all machines using your egbb, apparently do not work with Scorpio1.6 versi?n. :(
Pablo

PS. As a sugestion will be ideal when the machine load OK the egbb files announce "egbb files loaded" or something similar. Actually they announce when cannot load the egbb files (not found) but say nothing when they load them.

Pablo,
Scorpio 1.6 doesnot use any dll, so there is no way
it works with the new one. What i said was only for engines
which supported the old bitbases by using a dll.

Hi Carlos
You can download it from the link above (dann's ftp).
Just download egbb.zip , which has the dll in it, and extract to
the same directory as gfruit.

Re: Daniel Shawul's site is balky for me. So I made copies

Postby Pablo » 07 Feb 2006, 22:34

Hello Dann,
Daniel some days ago mail me saying you have at your site a new Experimental Scorpio version that only look at the egbb up to 4 pieces instead of 5 pieces.
Only today I was able to open your site after hundreds of dayly intents and I look for mentioned version. Regretfully I did not find it.
Please your comments.
Cheers,
Pablo

My site is also cantankerous, but maybe people can get access to it when they cannot get to D.S.'s site

Daniel,

Why do you use the name "book.dat" for the name of the book? It can be confused with other books.

Wouldn't "scorpiobook.dat" be clearer?

Dann,
It happen that Scorpio.exe is older than mine and read at the egbb folder up to 5 pieces instead of 4 pieces, so is not the 4 pieces reader mentioned by Daniel Shawul.

As long as you keep things in separate folders, I see no problem with book.dat.

But I think scorpio.book would be better. Three letter file extensions are so "DOS 1980s."

Problem #1: If 2 different chess engine authors each have a book named "book.dat" and both ask you to host it in the same Contrib folder.

Problem #2: If a user wants to download the book to scorpio at a later date and doesn't have the link available, how is s/he going to realize that book.dat is associated with scorpio?

About new bitbases..

Postby carlospesce » 14 Feb 2006, 18:52

HI Carlos
I have tested it with all the engines that support it and it works.
May be you have done something wrong when installing. Gfruit requires
that the bitbases are put in same directory as the exe.
BTW you should download the bitbases from dann's ftp. The one i offered for download some time back works only with scorpio. Make sure the dll you have is egbbdll.dll

test

Postby Pedro Castro » 17 Feb 2006, 04:34

Hello,

I have make a small test with danasah and with bitbases using mes400.epd with 15 s for position.

Without bitbases 300 / 400

With bitbases old format 312 / 400

With bitbases new format (4 pieces) 310 / 400

On the other hand I have checked that with bitbases the program doesn't have any difficulty of giving mate with knight and bishop.

Greetings

Pedro
Best wishes,

Hi Pedro
Thanks for running the tests!
Have you moved your bitbase probing code to the internal nodes?
The new ones contain all the 4 men, so you can also probe inside tree and cutoff. I expect this will solve some more positions i guess.

"I have tested it with all the engines that support it and it works."

Hi, Daniel.
Which dll I should use with Atak, egbbdll.dll and .dat files(like now)
or EgbbProbe.dll with .cmp files?

Parameters:
path => it is the directory where the bitbases are located
cache_size => size of cache used in bytes
load_options => options to load some bitbase in to RAM. By
default the 4 men are loaded in to RAM.
enum {LOAD_NONE,LOAD_4MEN,SMART_LOAD};

SMART_LOAD - How it works? :)

Regrads,
Mateusz.
Regards,
Mateusz.

Hi Mateusz
Download the egbb's from Dann's site which contains egbbdll.dll.
EgbbProbe.dll was a test version which works only for scorpio. I think i should remove that one from my site as it is confusing confusions.

SMART_LOAD is yet to be implemented :) It is just a place holder which i intend to use to load some 5 men when they are ready. So for now it just works like the LOAD_4MEN.

Hello Daniel,

I have used the first version of bitbases (3/4 pieces) successfully as much in the program Arena as Winboard. I have been decided to change to the new format with all the pieces (4). I use Arena generally to make the test of matches, I not had problem, also I have been able to make test of positions with epd2wb. Nevertheless when I putting the engine on winboard I obtain the same problem that Pablo had originally although I use the correct DLL.

3290 <first : egbb\kqqqk.w.cmp not found
Fatal Error: Failed to start first chess program danasah213 on localhost: egbb\kqqqk.w.cmp not found
