Some technical changes

Postby Volker Pittlik » 04 Jul 2007, 20:43

Some of you may have noticed that the forum wasn't reachable today. Please sorry for that. Also reading needs registration now. As you are already registered this does not make a difference for you. There are other changes which are not so obvious.

There will possibly be some more minor changes in the next days. Please forgive me if some inconvenience will occur again. I hope that the forum will run better in the end.

I forgive you.

But I want to name a few things I observed today which I do not
like. Perhaps they are just transition effects. Or a Firefox 2.0.0.4
effect.

- The topics or message links or whatever they are called are all
underlined. That is ugly.
- The first link of a thread is bold or dark blue the others are not.
That is ugly.
- The lines did not change their look or colour when I have clicked
on them and read the posting. I can no longer see what I have
seen and read before. The tiny icon in front of the lines stays
yellow or white, whatever it was before.
- When I click on one link of a thread (with yellow icon) and go
back to the main page and then to the sub page again all icons
of the thread are white. Even those of unread postings.

I hope the old look and feel will reappear. This icon thing is just
useless.

Thank you and the leaving ones for your work with this forum.

Sorry I did not change anything at the look of the forum. I'm dealing with idiotic programmed search robots and spam bots which cause a non-acceptable traffic and dozens of fake registrations every day.

Look at the bottom of the main page. A few days ago an out-of-control search engine visited the forum around 100 times simultaneously. That makes the forum slow and causes trouble with the hoster.

Again: I did not change anything at the design. I have no time for that :-).

Hi, Volker. :-)

I just have a quick observation: you recommend for new users to read your sticky readme post before trying to register, but users must register before they can read that post.

I just wanted to call that to your attention. Thanks. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the hint. However, the forum is readable again for everyone. Just for information:

In the last week three new users have registered. One one them with his real name. Another with an abbreviation of it and the third with something against the standards in this forum.

Besides that more than 200 (two hundred) fake registration have been tried within the last seven days. The tendency is increasing.

If I hadn't implemented a new mod preventing them to show their link in the users list Google would happily increase their rank in its result list what is the purpose of that kind of registrations. Even to delete all the crap manually would a pain.

If others who run a forum too would like to know details please send email or send a personal message.
