Crafty SMP and Winboard. Expected NPS for my specs?

Postby Carter Smith » 15 Jul 2007, 10:27

Just curious what I should expect in the neighborhood of NPS for my specs assuming I have everything set up correctly. I'm pretty new to this and it doesn't seem like I'm getting as much as I would expect
Windows Vista Ult.64 (grrrrr should have just got XP and upgraded after the SP comes out later this year)
AMD 64 X2 5600+
2 x 2 GB dual channel DDR2 800
Winboard 4.2.7
crafty_1919-AMD64-smp.exe as compiled by Bryan Hofmann
Here is my rc:
log off
hash=512M (system monitoring shows I have typically 1.25 gigs of free mem at any given time under no load situations)
hashp=256M
learn=7
ponder on
swindle on
resign 0
book random 1
book width 5
exit

My NPS are ~2,356,000 early-middle game with 18 pieces on the board.
fen:
6kr/2q3p1/p3P2p/3b2P1/3Np2P/b3B3/2PK4/5Q1R b - - 0 30
The copy I have that came with the Winboard installer sees about ~1,774,000.
Yet here we have some numbers that come from much less powerful machines which in many cases approach my results, and even surpass in two cases. Yet I have more "firepower" than the hardware specs on the machines that test above mine.

Well I'm just happy to get this SMP shortcut running! It's probably way too early for me to think about anything else atm :)

[EDIT]Oh according to speedfan, my CPU is averaging 50 per cent (both graphs seem to be in more or less sync) with occasional "spikes" to 53 per cent.

[EDIT 2]Just realized I forgot that I had more mem. I added a second stick last week and for some reason when I set the hash/p values I was recalling the free mem from the 2 gig I had before. I just reset the numbers to 2048 and 512 and am getting 2.7 million NPS. Still would expect more, but I'm just making comparative estimates w/o any real knowledge of how these things work.

hashp=256M

You may find that an excessively large pawn hash can actually hurt performance. Experiment with settings between 1M and 16M to find the sweet spot.

Seems that 8 gives the best results. Improved by 1-2 hundred thousand. :rockon:
I suppose I'll have to credit some of the lag to Vista. :/
Thank you

you also need "mt=2" in your crafty.rc file to tell crafty to use both processor cores...

that will double your NPS.

ahh thank you.
Didn't quite double, but I'll be happy with 5-6 million I suppose ><
This is much faster now than my 3000+ AthlonXP and more what I was expecting. Thanks for your help everyone :rockon:
