Queen 4.01

Postby Leen Ammeraal » 28 Nov 2007, 18:57

Queen 4.01 is available from my website http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/english.html.
I hope and expect that it will play slightly stronger than the previous version, 3.09, although the improvement, if any, will be very small, especially when compared with the long time (almost two years) since the release of that version. Sorry it took me so long.

Hello Leen,

You have crossed my mind a number of times.

I am so happy to see that one of the true gentlemen of the computerchess scene is still around.

Thanks for the free stuff!

Later.

Thanks Leen.

Is there any way of disabling the internal opening book?

Regards, Graham.

Thanks for your interest Graham. No, in the current version there is no way of doing this. But I agree that this might be a useful option and rather simple to implement, so I will add it. For machine-to-machine games, I think I will do this by means of the queen.ini file, say, with a possible line "nointernalbook". For human users, I could add an option "Use internal book", which is checked by default, unless there is a queen.ini file that says otherwise, and which the user can check or uncheck. Please let me know if this is what you would like.

Hi Leen,

that would be fantastic if you could go to the trouble to do that. :D

Graham. please download Queen402beta.exe from my website http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/english.html
It is the same as Queen401, except for the possibility to play without an internal book. You can disable this book by either using the Options menu or by adding the line nointernalbook in the queen.ini file.
Best wishes,
Leen

Hmmm - won't work under XP

Postby Graham Banks » 30 Nov 2007, 18:59

Hi Leen,

I can't get either new version working under Windows XP.

"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

Almost the same here under Win98:
the GUI starts and I can enter a move, but Queen just doesn´t answer, no matter what I´m doing.

It´s certainly this crap of new compiler ... :(

Please try the special engine version Queen402Eng, which I just put on my website
http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/english.html.
Someone who reported the same problem with Queen 4.01 wrote later that this special engine version worked on his computer.
Of course, I will try to solve the problem with the GUI version.

Thanks Leen. I'll try it out and let you know whether I have success with it.

Queen 4.02
I hope the problems with Queen 4.01 and 4.02beta are now solved.
It looks like my compiler settings were not right, so I recompiled the program using the old-fashioned compile and link command lines with options explicitly stated.
On my friend's computer, those 'configuration' error messages that appeared with the older version no longer appear with the new version, Queen 4.02, which is now available from my website http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/english.html.
Just in case the GUI version still cause any problems, the special engine version Queen402Eng is also still available.

unfortunately not - at least not under Windows 98. :(

Although there´s a little progress (now the systemfile msvcr80.dll is no longer needed) when starting the GUI, but the engine itself simply doesn´t respond at all (not playing with black or white and also analyzing doesn´t do anything). As I can see from the CPU load, the engine isn´t even calculating in the background, so it doesn´t seem to be just an output problem but it looks as if the engine won´t even be started at all.

Regards,
Franz

Hi Franz,
That is a pity. As I wrote, I tested this program on my friend's computer, who works under Windows XP (and of course, on my own computer, under Windows Vista).
Does the 'special engine version' work with you, or are you interested only in the GUI version?
I will look further into the matter, and reply to any further reactions, on Monday.
Thanks for your reaction.

Yes, the engine version is working in Arena (with both protocols, UCI and WB), but I´m much more interested in playing in its own GUI (there are already too many UCI/WB engines without own GUI for my taste  )

Have a nice weekend,
Franz

Queen 4.02a

Postby Leen Ammeraal » 05 Dec 2007, 11:34

Thanks to Franz Huber, who reported a problem with Queen 4.02 on his computer under Windows 98 and who tested quite a few experimental versions for me, Queen 4.02a is now available, which solves this problem. Otherwise, Queen 4.02a is the same as Queen 4.02.
