Which GUI for OS X?

Postby Ilari Pihlajisto » 19 Mar 2008, 12:41

I'm getting my first Macintosh this week and was wondering what GUIs (free or commercial) are available. I know Glaurung supports UCI engines, but I also need Winboard support. Jose has a Mac version, but it only seems to support the outdated WB protocol 1. Xboard apparently works if you install X11 first, but I was looking for a more native alternative.

So, what do you people use?

From:
http://jose-chess.sourceforge.net/

I see this:
"plug-in chess engine for play and analysis; supports both XBoard and UCI protocol."

I guess that SCID will run on a Mac. It's just C++ and TCL/TK.

But I don't have a Mac, so probably those who actually own one will have to chime in.

Scid probably would work, but I think it's horrible for actually playing chess. And it looks even uglier than Xboard.

As for Jose, it wants engines to use the "edit" command, which is for Winboard protocol 1. Sloppy only supports protocol 2, so I can't use Jose. Other than that, it seems like a cool program.

Anyway, I got Xboard installed with Darwinports. Turned out that X11 was already installed in OS 10 Leopard, so it wasn't too painful.

I registered to search for this exact question, and this response reminded me to look under macports. I found a port here: http://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/ ... d/Portfile

I'll try it tonight and report back.
