Finally a simple way to run TheKing on FICS

Postby Jason Kent » 24 Jan 2005, 20:24

Download the Zip (no engine file included :P) It includes an opening book and most of the configuration already done.

Here are the instructions.

Please sign up for a Computer account on FICS before you decide to run it there, or you may end up on the cheater list!

Thanks for your instructions, Jason!

Unfortunately the file "OBK_2_PGN.zip" seems to be destroyed. It is not to be unpacked. :?

I managed to retrieve the readme from the
corrupt zip file & the 'OPK2PGN.exe file is available here
(I assume it's the same one) >

http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/npatti ... kPage.html

Put OPK2PGN.exe and cmx.opk into My Documents folder.

Start menu/Run, type cmd, press enter (box pops up)

Type cd my documents, press enter

Type obk2pgn cmx.obk cmx.pgn, press enter

Wait until Phase 2 of 2 has finished, then close box

Open Fritz. New/opening book, Chessbase/Books folder, give name CM10th, okay

Edit/opening books/import games, select cmx.pgn from My Documents folder, enter

CM10th opening book is created under Fritz for your use!

NOTE: Because the data has effectively been converted?into one game with many variations,
under book options the number of games for a move to be played should be set to 1. That
way CM will have access to all sensible moves it would normally play.

Thanks for letting me know that file was broken. It should be fixed now. I checked the other website, and yes, that is the same file.

By the way, Yesterday I tried to convert the cmx.pgn to a bookthinker book and I was getting errors. I don't think bookthinker supports priority of moves by ! and ?.

Unfortunately the Arena GUI also has problems with prioritization.

The good news is that it works great under Fritz.

It functions adding result 1/2-1/2 at the end of each game and cleaning nags with pgn-extract.
I was able to obtain a thinker.dat for bookthinker version 2.1b of 686 kb and now TheKing uses your own openings book in Winboard.

That book will not help much, as the book is useless
without the nags, which Thinkers bookmaker does not support.
I have done that too long ago and the quality was horrible.
Actually it will play the former '?' moves for both sides then...

P.S. @Jason:
It would be nice if you would give some credit to the book author
of your download, as this book was an old compilation by me ;)
I guess though I have made better books meanwhile...

Thanks Guenther for your book and clarification about the CM pgn! So now we just need to get Lance Perkins to add prioritizations to bookthinker. :)
I just found out that OBK2PGN was updated at the site you mentioned earlier. Since it isn't yet possible to use this book under winboard, I am removing from my readme.

I'm so sorry about neglecting credit. When I look for stuff on the web, it sometimes sits in my drive for a while before I get to it. I think I got your book about a year ago, and the site where I got it wasn't working anymore.

Are you willing to share your newer books?

You are right, it has many nags "?". Thanks by your explanation.
