I have edited all messages and copied them together in one . Unfortunately the discussion went out of hand immediatly and ended in a "I post somewhere else" message.

I've got a severe cold and I'm not in the mood to be to balancing. If someone doesn't like this forum, Winboard engines, the Winboard protocol, me in person, phpBB, my domain name or whatever there is absolutely no reason to post here. If someone doesn't post here I notice that. There is absolutely no reason to inform me about that.

In addition I admit I sometimes appreciate the writing style of the originating poster. What I will not miss is his arrogant attitude.

In the last weeks and months I played around with a lot of new amateur releases.
Now my hard disk is full of blunder...

I don't like winboard engines (because I'm working with the Multi-PV-Modus).

But these "winboard forum" here is the "mother of the freebies".

What are Chessbase annotations? The $ symbols are in the PGN standard. When Winboard cannot do anything with them, it might be useful to fix it. IMHO Winboard is of no use, when looking at PGNs with variations, anyway. I think that PGNs with variations is still the best format to discuss positions analysis - even in a forum called Winboard forum.

I think +- +/- etc. signs inside a PGN are not in conformance with the PGN Standard! In http://www.tim-mann.org/Standard you all can read what the $n mean.

I was neither speaking about WB nor about the WB forum ...
Most chess players look at something without any interface before
they decide to do something with the posted informations.
If one just sees $4 or $19 the motivation to look at it is already
gone.
Another solution would be to post the explanations too. or do you expect
someone to have the PGN standard handy, when reading a forum?
BTW without the full PGN most positions won't be reproducable at all,
because the hash table informations miss.

It seems from reading the standard that $n, where n is a number from 0-255 are used for Nags. That is the standard Nags in the moves: !, ?, !!, !?, ?!, ?? can be replaced by $1, $2, .. $6. However, no mention is made of numbers greater than 6. They must be chessbase's own NAGS.

without any need from extra chessboards or any software?

wrong not me?, or may be you did use a bad version of Crafty 19.18
at all? Do you really think I need to make up a faked debug?

I posted my analyzing for Crafty 19.18 BH under WB and I know how to set it up.
If you use a CB version from Crafty anything is possible, which
is known since long... Moreover at least a Crafty 19.17 version
from Dann Corbit also made strange blunder moves sometimes
and this was reported in a thread at CCC by Bob Hyatt.

Also you did not post the pgn files, which would be necessary to
reproduce the exact behaviour, but it seems you have no idea
about this?

BTW you have also removed all time control/hardware informations
from your positions. Do you know that even F8 makes a lot of the
same 'blunders' in reasonable time?

No, of course not. I also see and respect your point. I personally prefer normal PGN. Pasting the PGN to some editor window, for example, and then loading it into some Chess software (where I then typically have my engine running in analyse mode).

Often moves are difficult to reproduce. PGNs will hardly help (when things are not reproducable from FEN - sometimes they do help, however). As you point out, hash tables often make things difficult to reproduce. But the PGN will not help anything in reproducing the actual state of the hash tables in the game. Many/most cases are not that critical and one will see, that an engine might blunder for a while (perhaps not as long, as the time control of the actual games suggests). I did not see Walter's post (I probably did not see any original, just what is here now) under a reproducability/bug report point of view at all. I saw it as a collection of possibly interesting traps for engines.

One side note to reproducability of Crafty games: I have seen it more than once, that there were different versions of Crafty with the same version number. In Oct. 2002, I was in mail contact with M.Feist of ChessBase about an enhancement of the PGN standard for the engine calculaton infos. CB. were just the quickest to implement it. As he wrote me, there has been a kind of conference deciding about this, with the participation of Chess Assistant, DGT, and others. The new format for the engine's infos allows to re-create graphical evaluation & thinking time profiles of any game, which is extremely useful to find "interesting" positions much more quickly.

(We didn't talk about standard commentary symbol's codes though. - I guess it's possible that some of the PGN standard infos on the web are not up-to-date.)

I'm not aware of another GUI which supports that engine info format though, currently. Chess Asssistant maybe?

It seems from reading the standard that $n, where n is a number from 0-255 are used for Nags. That is the standard Nags in the moves: !, ?, !!, !?, ?!, ?? can be replaced by $1, $2, .. $6. However, no mention is made of numbers greater than 6. They must be chessbase's own NAGS.

Pallav, you must have overlooked it. In the PGN Standard at the link I gave some posts up, numbers 1 to 139 are described, also it is noted that higher values are reserved for future definitions. I think, I have seen a longer list once (perhaps together with Scid). The date of the document: "Revised: 1994.03.12". Did chessbase even exist then?
