SOS?

Does anyone know more about the chessengine SOS? I played it against CometB12 which it defeated easily 3-1 in a four match test (40/40).

Unfortunately I can't get SOS to work, someone mentioned that you require a
lot of memory to get it to work and I only have 64 Mb..
But looking at some results, SOS is probably one of the better winboard programs up there with Amnon,Phalanx,Light Goliath etc

It is true you can't make SOS play against another engine on a machine with only 32 MB, since SOS itself uses 20 MB for hash tables. The problem seems to be with Windows which reserves a lot of memory. I think 64 MB will do if you play against SOS yourself. With two machines, try to configure the other machine's hash size so that the memory suffices (for example, choose 16 MB). I currently have 96 MB RAM, and when I make them play one another with hash sizes of about 24 MB, there remains less than 20 MB free. No wonder that 64 MB seems to be small. When I had 32 MB RAM, I could not use hash sizes above 4 MB! To be able to run SOS was the very reason why I extended my RAM with an additional 64 MB.
There are programs which can free up memory (like a defragmenter) and show what is available. Perhaps such a program would also help.

I have 64Mb as well and it works fine. If the other program is below 20Mb for hash it should work smoothly. You're right about the playing strength of SOS. I played two long games against Crafty17.6, which it drew.

I have played 30 games with SOS and Crafty16.19 some months ago. Time control was 40 moves in 60 minutes. Hardware was PIII 450 MHz. Ponder was off. Result:

That would be a welcome addition to my collection. Is 16.19 stronger than 17.07 because in a test of mine 17.07 lost 4-0 (40mov/10min) against SOS (it might be a coincidence due to few games)?

With a PC 64 MB RAM you can use SOS (20 MB hash) against another engine with 16 MB hash without any problems. My second PC, a Cyrix CxM2 233/64 proves that.
