Figures in brackets after a chess engine makes a move

Postby Dave Neve » 16 Dec 2020, 21:08

Hello

I picked up on a game on Agadmator's channel, edited the position and entered an alternative move, and then got a chess engine to play out the rest of the game against itself

I can see moves in Winboard like

1. Re7+ {+0.82/17} Qxc4 {-0.47/15} 2. Rxg7+ {+0.78/18} Kh8 {-0.46/14} 3. Rxc7+ {+0.81/19} Rxf6 {+0.16/16} 4. Rxc4 {+0.81/19} Rxd6 {+0.12/14} 5. Rxc3 {+0.77/18} a3 {+0.10/14} 6. Re1 {+1.27/16} Rf6 {+0.14/13} 7. g3 {+1.52/16} g5 {+0.03/13} 8. Re4 {+1.53/16} Kg8 {-0.27/14} 9. Kg2 {+1.54/16} Rd6 {-0.11/13} 10. h4 {+1.65/16} gxh4 {-0.15/13} 11. Rg4+ {+1.47/14} Kh7 {-0.10/13} 12. Rxh4 {+1.74/16} Bd8 {-0.10/13} 13. Re4 {+1.86/15} Ra4 {-0.33/13} 14. Rcc4 {+2.03/14} b6 {-0.03/13} 15. Nd4 {+1.86/16} Ra8 {-0.39/13} 16. Re8 {+2.43/16} Ra6 {-0.92/14} 17. Nf5 {+2.96/16} Rd5 {-0.92/14} 18. Ne3 {+3.09/17} Rd7 {-1.04/13} 19. Rc6 {+3.08/16} Raa7 {-0.99/13} 20. Nf5 {+3.30/16} Bg5 {-1.35/15} 21. f4 {+3.36/17} Rd2+ {-1.55/14} 22. Kh3 {+4.04/17} Rd5 {-1.66/15} 23. Ne3 {+4.34/17} Rd8 {-2.25/15} 24. Ree6 {+4.75/17} Be7 {-2.95/15} 25. Rxh6+ {+4.91/17} Kg8 {-3.01/14} 26. Rcg6+ {+5.43/17} Kf7 {-3.00/14} 27. Nc4 {+

What does the bit in brackets mean after each move? Must be some kind of evaluation but how do I read it?

Thanks

The first number is the score in centi-Pawn, from the POV of the side to move. The second number is the depth to which the engine searched the position.
