In round robin or swiss system, when 2 programs ended with the same score, there is another set of score written beside them. What does the latter score means?
Hope this is not too off-topic as I am trying to understand the published tournament results in Frank's pages.
In round robin tournaments ties are split using the Berger-Sonneborn method, which - for each player - adds up the points of the defeated opponents and half the points of the opponents against whom the result was a draw.
In swiss tournaments practice is to split ties using the Buchholz method, which simply adds up the points of the opponents of the player in question.
Both methods are based on the assumption that it is more valuable to gain your points against stronger players.
