The term "freeware"

In the Winboard ticker there's information about AnMon. And in part it says: "AnMon is not freeware", this I do not understand. Because the way that I define freeware is a program that can be downloaded, that is _not_ a commercial program, and is also _not_ a shareware program (where the programer expects you to pay him if you continue to use the program, an example of shareware I guess would be the old "Now" Dos Chess program).
But since I don't think AnMon's programmer expects to be payed for it's use, I don't understand why it is not considered Freeware.
How do you define Freeware?

Pete,
I will not that the software stand on many webpages in the world wide web. I see peculiar chess webpages. Here people download a program and put this program on an other page. Yes this is freeware but the people which made a download have not other informations about this programs.
Christian Barreteau, Bruno Lucas, Rudolf Huber and other have not a webpage. Not all programmer have time for a webpage. I speak with many programmer and I try that I can put the versions on my webpage. I made so many programs available !
I spend a lot of time in this hobby and I get many programs. So I speak with the programmer and write that the programs are not freeware and the programs stand exclusiv on my or other webpages.
People can see all important informations about all WinBoard programs on my page and this is good. Good why the people have not problems and can play without problems with the programs.
So I wrote that the programs are not freeware.

I think that people which will put a program on a webpage can ask the programmer. The programmer know on which page he can find his program.
I made not the work for other people !
I will that my page is popular in the world and the people find a basis adress for WinBoard engines.
The programmer can change this (not freeware) but the programmer know what I write.

On the other hand people wrote me and say that more people can play with the programs when the programs stand on more pages.
This is not correct. The people have problems go in the fora and ask (problems here and problems there ...).
You, I or other people answere and spend the time for peculiar chess webpages ?
OK, people can ask Christian Barreteau or other programmer and when the information are not good on this webpage from other people can Christian say ...
Please delete my program from your webpage, my program is not freeware !
Pete, this is not new !
Little Goliath is not freeware (look in the Goliath.ini) !

Dragon, AnMon, Knighx (Techno Chess), SOS, Ant, Little Goliath is not Freeware !!! This programs stand exclusiv on my webpage or a lot of this programs stand furthermore exclusive on the webpage of Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic. A top adress why Djordje spend a lot of time in this hobby and wrote over this programs !!!
But when the programmer say to me that his program is freeware I wrote this in my News-Ticker ! This is not a problem for me !
I think it is better when all programmer wrote in the readme files that the programs are not Freeware. So the people must go to the webpages of the programmer and can see the important informations. Other people have not a chance to enrich s.o. (people which have commercial products) !!!
More and more WB engines run under commercial products.
Example:
When a firm make a good support (Chess-Base) and have contacts to the programmer and help that the programs runs under the GUIs (Matthias Wüllenweber, Mathias Feist, programmer from Chess-Base spend a lot of time and help the programmer) and send the WB programmer the software (free) is this OK !
But when other firm not have contacts to the programmer and made advertisement with WinBoard and put programs on webpages is this not OK ! Then is this not OK when the programs are not freeware !!!
All this in my bad english, sorry !
I hope you can understand what I will say !
The professionls programmer have a copy protection and the amateur programmer have this !

Hallo,
Danke :-))
Gruß

regarding the term freeware. Maybe what the programmers mean is that their
programs are not released as 'open source' software ex. GNUChess.
For me the term freeware is that it is free. Crafty is free but there
are restrictions.
Happy New Year to all,
Michel Chassey
