In modes where the key wouldn't do anything without ALT, the ALT
is optional. For example, in ICS mode the cursor keys are used
for editing in the ICS interaction (terminal) window, so you have
to press ALT to get the various shortcut functions like forward
move, etc. When you aren't in ICS mode and don't have any dialog
boxes on the screen that use the cursor keys, you don't have to
press ALT. This is meant to be for your convenience.

Thank you, Tim. So it is advisable first to save the game and then only move about in it, lest we lose an interesting part. (I use text editors very often, and the End key usually takes me to the end of line, hence the bad habit of trying to use it in Winboard too.)
By the way, wouldn't it be possible in future releases to go to the end of a loaded game with only one key press? Or is it possible now, only I don't know how?
