Congratulations to Thorsten Greiner on an *excellent* program.
Amy is a powerhouse (285/300 at WAC on PII 300MHz given 5sec/move).
I had to make a bunch of changes to make it work. Most notably, there was no timing function (it always returned 0) so essentially, it would go into an infinite loop because it always thought it had more time to think.
There is not drand48() or srand48() in ANSI C, so I borrowed the FreeBSD versions of those functions.
I fixed two array bounds oddities. There are a couple small issues left unresolved, but it is a very impressive program.
Here it is:
ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/amy_0_6.zip
Have fun.

Crafty will be a formidable challenge to any program.
It scores 300/300 on WAC!
;-)
Of course, pure tactics to not always translate directly into play. I expect that this program can beat crafty from time to time. But I think right now, crafty is probably slightly more advanced. Still, this program is already very, very good and the code base is small and easy to understand. I expect it may become a real world-beater in the near future.

I configured Amy with winboard. The program moves at move number one but it continues to ponder on the second move until time runs out. Any solutions?
James
