Is it possible to run the above testset in Winboard? Has anyone done so? If you have I'd be interested to hear what the ratings were. I know most can be run
through Fritz but my computer still does'nt like Chessbase products.
I'm trying to gauge the strength of the various program(sos, phanlax, amy, and the two versions of gromit).
Programs that can process EPD can do it. Most of them don't create correct EPD output, so you will have to read the documentation for each and every tool to understand the output produced.
Crafty is the only freeware product I know of that can read and write EPD completely correctly.
To use crafty, do this command:
epdpfga louget.epd louget.out
which will read a file of EPD records called louget.epd and write a processed file with answers called louget.out. Then to find out how well crafty scored on the problem set, do this:
epdscor louget.out
It's a pity that other tools are not able to process EPD correctly. Especially since the EPD processor used by crafty (written by Steven J. Edwards himself) is available for anyone to use.
Strangely, all of the commercial programs process EPD incorrectly. The two that are closest to correct are Hiarcs and Rebel. The others are laughably distant from correct implementation.
