Crafty and Cygwin1.dll

Postby Dan-the-K » 14 May 2005, 18:22

"How to use Crafty with WinBoard" http://au.geocities.com/cafelattegames/chess/

says that Cygwin1.dll must be run with Crafty. However, I successfully run Crafty by itself, i.e. without Winboard, without Cygwin1.dll.

So: is this file necessary and if so, where does it belong?

I have no idea why Crafty was linked to cygwin as it is not required. My guess would be that the .dll should be in the same directory as the crafty.exe file.

BTW you see to be having a really hard time with setting up Crafty. What are you wanting to use it for? If you just want to play against it your self (human vs crafty) I have 2 crafty packages just for this with winboard included. All you have to do is unzip and start up winboard.

Hi, Bryan:

Since cygwin1.dll is not needed, Maybe the person who wrote "]"How to use Crafty with WinBoard" should remove the reference and remove it from the download. :)

I now have a half dozen versions of Crafty and each has Cygwin1.dll in the same directory as the executable. It seems to run fine without it and I could use the 6Meg of storage made available by removing Cygwin1.dll.

I am using Crafty by itself primarily to analyze ("annotate") games. I think I have it setup fine now. I don't expect to use it as an internet server. As you can see, I've tailored crafty.rc.

You say "BTW you seem to be having a really hard time with setting up Crafty." I'm sorry to give that impression. Any apparent problem is due to the nature of the beast - several different authors, several different websites. Having 6 versions drives me crazy.

I am extremely impressed with the quality of this homebrewed product and with the time and effort programmers have put into it. :) Over 200 Winboard engines! I expect a lot from a project like this and I drive it hard. The documentation is extensive (which I like) but has a few holes in it, and some information is hard to find. I want to use Crafty and Winboard as extensively as possible.

I much prefer Winboard and Crafty to any commercial product. I actually have Junior 8 and Hiarcs 8 but find Winboard to be superior. In fact, I just discovered another useful feature: setting the interface to be passive. Chess Partner doesn't have that feature.

Hi Dan, Bryan,

Out of interest I checked out the Crafty 1919 version available at the link you mentioned. I checked it for it's dll dependencies (using 'Dependency Walker - http://www.dependencywalker.com/). I does indeed require the 'cygwin1.dll'. That means the Linux source code has been compiled using GCC/Cygwin combination to port it to Windows.
If you believe it is running on your system without 'cygwin1.dll', this is not possible. If you do a search for the file I think you'll find it lurking in your Windows\system folder, if not in the Crafty folder.
Ok course, you shouldn't bother with this version as Bryan builds the best and fastest 'Crafties' on the planet! - without cygwin.

regards,
Jim.

Please note that I said linked above which means the individual compiled crafty using the cygwin1.dll which means for that compile it is required. The only reason to do this is due to the fact that the individual was cross compiling on a Linux system for the windows platform.
