Hello
Can you (maybe again) tell me, how "battle of the crowns" will work.
I think, you will make groups. Which groups? Do you already know who is in which group?
The programs are being rougly ranked with my calibration experiment at G/60. I think it may take another 1500 games before I get an accurate figure.
Once the approximate rankings are available, I will form 4 groups of approximately ten programs each. Within each group, there will be a round robin tournament. For each pairing, both programs will play 4 games -- two as white and two as black -- at G/90.
Round-Robin play is much better than Swiss format when the true strength of the programs is not known. Swiss only discovers the strongest and the weakest. All the rankings in between are in serious question. But a round-robin format will determine quite accurately how strong the programs are.
The winner of the 4 star group will be proclaimed the strongest freely available winboard engine on earth.
The loser of the 4 star group will be demoted to 3 stars. The winner of the 3 star group will be promoted to 4 stars. Similarly for each of the lower groups. However, with the bottom group, there is nowhere lower to go so the bottom 1 star program has to stay put.
Is my explanation clear?
