Re: Fafis 2.0, release!

Postby Michael Yee » 23 May 2005, 00:02

Hi Rafael,

Thanks for the new version, but I'm having a little trouble with it (WinXP).

After running Fafis 2.0 from the commandline and quitting, an exe file with a strange name always appears in my Temp directory (under Document and Settings, etc.) that is then flagged as the Kelvir.Q worm by my AVG anti-virus software.

I'm confused about what's going on since I'm pretty sure I'm not infected with any worms (although I'm going to run a full scan soon).

Does your program write any files outside of its directory?

Or can anyone else explain what might be going on? (i.e., why is a file always written in Temp after another program exits?)

Thanks,
Michael

Hello!

Well, Fafis does not write any new file, and about a worm of course not i think that problem can be from your pc.

But will be fine if some other person found that kind of behavior for check that in my pc for a virus, by at this moment i check and not file was generated or virus found.

Thx, enjoy the program.

Rafael.

Same here, Fafis always generates C27D8FEF-D7AE-42C0-82E6-F30598265639.EXE in the users temp folder!

=> What Google says about this wellknown exe:

well, that has happened also to others. In fact I think it is not bad that you know now that a virus is working on your computer.

By the way, I was just wondering: Is this new version now a successor of the formaly planned as commercial engine Fafis X or is it a new version of your free engine ?

P.S.: Anyway fine to have you back here among us freebies... :)

Hello!

the answer is easy:yes is the sucesor of Fafis X, the last X that a gave for test was x0.3 (leo has 0.1, i think), this Fafis 2.0 will be like X0.23, that is at least 75ELO strong than any other FafisX.

Rafael

PS: I will try to keep this proyect free, but the bills and time are very expensive.

Hi Rafael,

Glad you've cleared up the virus problem, now we can get back to congratulating you on a very nice chess engine release,
which is what we should really be talking about. :)

regards,
Jim.

More problems I'm afraid! :(

Just downloaded the new 'clean' version - crashes
on both Winboard and Arena - My system > AMD XP/M 2500, WinXp Pro.

I had installed fafis 2.0, ran it, deleted it, and then installed fafis 2.1. They both ran fine and I have an AMD 3000xp+.

Using NAV, I did not find any virus.

However using Search on the Start Menu, I found a find with a similar name in the \windows\prefetch folder:

05/22/2005 08:18 PM 3,486
C27D8FEF-D7AE-42C0-82E6-F3059-355C9C7C.pf

By doing a google search for "prefetch folder" it appears that a user should del *.* this folder periodically.

"If you're frequently using the same few applications over and over again, prefetching can greatly increase the apparent speed of a system. Rather than waiting for you to click an icon to start a program, and then loading all of the associated files, libraries, and pointers necessary to run the program, XP has all the components of your programs preloaded. When you click an icon to start the program, most of the hard work is already done.

The drawback to prefetching is that XP will prefetch a program even if you use it only once or twice. XP will retain a copy of a portion of it in the Prefetch folder. From there, it will prefetch the program, taking resources from your workstation even though you may have no intention of ever using the program again. If you have enough unused or little-used items prefetching, over time your system will actually run slower than if you never prefetched at all. This is especially evident on systems with limited resources."
