Muse 0.899

Postby fierz » 22 Oct 2004, 22:53

aloha!

i just published muse 0.899 on the muse page: http://www.fierz.ch/muse.htm

what's new:
- it fixes (i hope) the losses on time that muse 0.898 had from time to time
- it supports more winboard / UCI commands, in particular it can now ponder under UCI
- it plays a bit better than muse 0.898 - way to go, but at least a small
improvement.

although this is the winboard forum i want to add that muse is designed primarily as UCI engine, and tested by me as UCI engine. it does support the basics of the winboard protocol, but if you can, you should use it as an UCI engine. sorry!

but now - be aMused!

martin,

How did you come up with those version numbers (0.898, 0.899)? Whatever happened to 1.0, 1.1, ...? :D

hehe - ok, here's the philosophy behind these numbers: 1.0 is a "finished product", 0.9 is the first full beta. so i'm getting very close to that, but i'm not there yet. it's just not quite finished yet, that's what i want to say.

cheers

New Muse version

Hi Martin,

Aren't both text parts below somehow in contradiction? ;-)
Do you suggest me to run Muse as UCI in RWBC?
(no problem for me, as the Polyglot adapter seems by far
better, than any adapter, commercials even wished to have created)

Best regards,
G?nther

hi g?nther,

no real contradiction :-)
UCI is the preferred mode for muse, but as i said it also supports winboard. i test at home under arena, but play on ICC under winboard. this is for historical reasons, earlier versions of arena and earlier versions of muse had problems in ICC mode, but not in normal mode, leading to losses on time when playing on ICC. i didn't understand what was going on, so i used winboard to play on ICC, and that worked. and then i never changed it any more... don't fix it if it aint broken!

whether or not to use polyglot is a question of whether you have pondering enabled. if your tournaments are with ponder off, you can use it as winboard or UCI engine, should make no or very little difference. if you have ponder on, then you should use it with polyglot, because then it can ponder.

cheers
martin

PS: now i would finally have a reason to switch to arena as muse cannot ponder under winboard, but could ponder in arena. OTH, i would want it to be able to ponder under both!

Thanks for the quick reply Martin.
As I always use ponder off on my single machine,
I will stick to the WB protocol.

BTW, if I got your explanation right, you should get some
boost now, when using Arena for your ICC playing!
(at least as long as your ponder problem remains unsolved
for Winboard)

Cheers,
