Is there any sort of generic engine for remote play?
I mean something that simply forwards commands across a socket.
If there isn't one I'll probably give writing one a shot, but there is no point in reinventing the wheel.

Not totally sure, what you want exactly. Perhaps the setup, I tried to explain in http://volker-pittlik.name/wbforum/viewtopic.php?t=2817 is useful?
