Hi Bryan
I take it for granted that this version might be
a little bit stronger than the original. What I do
not understand is, why the authors do not always
"produce" such faster engines on the spot. Any
explanations?

It could be a lack of skills, or a lack of tools. The best commercial compilers usually cost a lot of money, and not all authors can afford to buy them.

Tord is correct in that compilers cost a great deal of money. In the case of Fruit & Toga, I compiled them both so players are getting the fastest in both cases. I have an open offer to any chess engine programer to compile their program. While they have the talent in programing mine lies with compiling. This takes hours to get the most out of the code.
