This is the message of the month I guess. Thanks to Daniel (the one with one "n").

My quick 10-game impression is that it plays an OK game, certainly not at the level of the previous version. Funny, though, it still carries the 1.04 version number. Why bother to have version numbers if they don't change?

The reason it does not play as well is that all the crafty ideas have been removed. The place that got hurt was evaluation. Many of the ideas that got removed did not find a suitable replacement yet. Everything else is equal or better to the previous code base.
The current version on my ftp site will say DanChess 1.04a.
The source he sent to me was inconsistent (in one place it said "Dan 1.00" and in another "Dan 1.04")

A different evaluation is not a mere bugfix, so "1.04a" is bit misleading.
The source code of the stronger and controversial 1.04 would have been more interesting.

Agreed. Probably, 1.05 would have been better.
The missing evaluation techniques are found in the crafty code base.

Thanks Dann!! I have also updated my page with the executable.
The package contains
danchess.exe
book.dat [Oliver's]
Readme.txt
danchess.ini
danchess.bmp
Note to users: The book is not compatible with the previous version.
So use the one that comes along each version.
regards
Daniel
