NoNot so surprising actually.
I believe this endgame was discussed in CCC not long ago, it requires
a different kind of knowledge than the usual drive to the side and mate heuristic.
Crafty, like many other engines, probably lack this exception to the general rule.
-S.
I can add that when I look at the game crafty even did not try to centralize the king and certainly did not try to reduce the distance between the kings.NoNot so surprising actually.

It is very surprising because Crafty knows to win KQ vs KR without tablebases and I thought KQ vs KN needs exactly the same knowledge.

in KQKN you probably have to seperate the knight from his king just as in KRKN.
Ok, I don't know what Crafty tries to do. I think maybe only squeeze to the
side, but the side does not work as well as the corner in my experience.
-S.
Of course, when the game gets down to 4 pieces, the EGTB's would take care of it.Hello Slobodan,
I will bite on this morsel.
Precisely what does your post mean in the grand scheme of things?
That Crafty's endgame technique is lousy?
Can we measure the performance of other engines to see their technique?
Why oh why would an author go through the trouble of giving their engine the ability to use egtbs just to have someone post that the engine cannot handle a position that would be trivial with the four piece egtbs installed?
Just seems strange to me but I am willing to learn....
My two cents.

But ...
Probing the EGTB's in search is costly. Disk access is slow. That is why most (if not all) programs do not probe in the quiescense search. And guess what: The quiescense search is all about evaluating what happens after a capture sequence. Also what happens after a capture sequence that leads to an EGTB position. Probing the EGTB's are too expensive, so the evaluation should know if a position is favourable or not.
So endgame knowledge of basic endings is still important. It may find key moves in an ending a few plies earlier.
Richard.
There is no problem in KQ vs KN to know if the position is favourable or not favourable for the queen so this is not relevant for this case.Of course, when the game gets down to 4 pieces, the EGTB's would take care of it.Hello Slobodan,

I think that in KQ vs KN search and the same knowledge of centralizing the king
and reducing the distance between the kings should be enough.
No
Crafty did not try to squeeze the enemy king to the side.
Uri
Richard, I agree in general. But KQKN is really easy in this context. Just eval it as win for the Q, and wait until the pos is on the board, when TBs take over. It would not matter, if the eval accounts for a really good KQKN position or a difficult one, when you decide to trust the TBs later (many other positions are similar). Of course you argument is important, when the position/material constellation is not that clear.Of course, when the game gets down to 4 pieces, the EGTB's would take care of it.

Probing the EGTB's are too expensive, so the evaluation should know if a position is favourable or not.
So endgame knowledge of basic endings is still important. It may find key moves in an ending a few plies earlier.
of course but I think that KQ vs KN is easier than KQ vs KR and the same strategy that helps to win KQ vs KR should help also in KQ vs KN.You dismiss my idea with a hard and confident "no", but still it seems you don't really know for sure either?NoI think KQKR works just fine with the squeezing to the corner idea,NoNot so surprising actually.
I believe this endgame was discussed in CCC not long ago, it requires
a different kind of knowledge than the usual drive to the side and mate heuristic.
Crafty, like many other engines, probably lack this exception to the general rule.

It is very surprising because Crafty knows to win KQ vs KR without tablebases and I thought KQ vs KN needs exactly the same knowledge.
Uri
in KQKN you probably have to seperate the knight from his king just as in KRKN.
I think that in KQ vs KN search and the same knowledge of centralizing the king
and reducing the distance between the kings should be enough.
I haven't tried centralizing the king though. I would definitely think that
hunting the knight to a corner would be a more direct strategy, that's assuming you can seperate the two in the first place. In KRKN that's not always possible but a queen should offer much better chances of course.
But you don't try and centralize the king when winning KQ-KR, you drive it toof course but I think that KQ vs KN is easier than KQ vs KR and the same strategy that helps to win KQ vs KR should help also in KQ vs KN.
I simply use common sense and I never saw a case of a program that failed to win KQ vs KN before this game when i saw cases of failure to win in KQ vs KR.

the corner. Only in the corner can you create the kind of mate threats that is
needed to finally win the rook.
It does seem simpler than Q-R, but I haven't tried it.
I just don't see what centralizing the king would accomplish.

Looking up moves in a list is easy, but that's not playing chess...Hello Slobodan,
I will bite on this morsel.
