Hi,
I am so lazy I never tried to install the Intel compiler on my machine (I have no internet access).
Anybody could compile Fruit 1.5 (to be sent by email) with it?
It's for tomorrow ...
That's only Tom I think

Thanks,
Fabien.

I am talking about Fruit 1.5, not the publicly-available 1.0Hey Fabien,
I'm at work right now. When I get home I'll send you an Intel executable
for Linux. Unfortunately, it may be kinda late since I'm getting ready
for a design review next week and I'll be working till about 8:00 EST.

Ah, that makes sense. My email is : tlikens@charter.netI am talking about Fruit 1.5, not the publicly-available 1.0Hey Fabien,

I haven't found your email address anywhere, send me an email if you think you might have time.
Don't push yourself!
Bye for now,
Fabien.
I'm going to stop making the source to my program available. I use "piece" to mean N,B,R,Q and "man" or "men" to mean any chessperson. It's just a matter of time till the PC police catch up with me.How boring
I was just joking about people who feel forced to use "person" instead of "man" and so on ...
In a popular 3d-math book, a well known author replaced the software-package name "RenderMan" with "RenderPerson" in the whole book; how low can you go?))

I wasn't aware your code was available. I thought Dann only had an outdated version on his FTP server or did I miss anything?I'm going to stop making the source to my program available. No problem. My source is not available for download but I send it to anyone who asks. Unless you have discovered some new secret (which I haven't) I think it only makes sense to make the source available to avoid any clone controversy (though my engine is so weak I doubt anyone would think it a clone).Sorry I got confused with DanChess!

Funnily enough the clone accusations are usually ridiculous, like Ruffian and List which are obviously stronger than Crafty. No problem. I agree with you on all counts except I tend to think "it's open-source so it must be good". I figure the author has put in a lot of effort and is proud of his work. I have and I am. In my program I've tried to keep the code clean and comment generously - especially in areas that I struggled with when I started. I have several pages of comments regarding rotated bitboard mechanics (more lines of comments than code). One person that I sent the source to wrote me back saying thanks to that he now understood how bitboards worked. That, to me, is very satisfying.Funnily enough the clone accusations are usually ridiculous, like Ruffian and List which are obviously stronger than Crafty. No problem. In my case I believe making the source code available is very important:
1) almost all open-source engines use bitboards, any other strong engine than Phalanx not using bitboards? We all know the situation is reverse in closed-source engines (although that might change when 64-bit technology is *widely* available)
2) I show what can be done with no special technique at all, maybe a message "do you have bugs?". I think engine authors focus too much on making the code efficient. Making it "lighter" is also good (I'm a long way from having finished this).
3) many programmers only release the source code of early projects (not specific to chess), so that lowers the average quality of open source software. I even find myself thinking when downloading software "it's open-source so it must be crap".
4) I believe I follow a different approach at least to software development (not to chess yet). E.g. my Windows executable should be around 100KB-long.
5) in my experience (in other games than chess) there is always at least one person who benefits from your source code
Plenty of others, and no reason not to release it ...
Fabien, a believer in open source.
